Background / History

Class D begins the school year as the academy’s most disorganized class. Hoya Chukai predicts that it will be unable even to select a leader, describing its students as prone to doing whatever they please rather than studying or organizing themselves. 1

Unlike Classes A, B, and C, Class D initially has no elected class representative. Its lack of coordination remains evident in its noisy classroom atmosphere and a student body marked by frequent gossip, poor study habits, and interpersonal conflicts. 11 25 47

Chabashira Sae later explains to Horikita Suzune that Class D’s placement is not based solely on academics. She characterizes its students as people unable to integrate into society, while using Ayanokoji Kiyohime—who deliberately scores 51 points in each subject despite solving advanced questions—as evidence that the class contains capable but flawed students. 26 27

After learning that 20 million points are needed for a transfer to Class A, Horikita asks Ayanokoji to help improve Class D’s position. Ayanokoji agrees only conditionally, noting that the class is likely to lose nearly all of its hidden points before its members experience the consequences themselves. 27

Known Members and Dynamics

• Ayanokoji Kiyohime — A highly capable but socially inexperienced student who hides her academic ability behind uniform scores of 51; she eventually agrees to consider helping Horikita improve the class. 26 27
• Horikita Suzune — Seeks to understand why she was placed in Class D and resolves to lead the class toward Class A. 26 27

Relationships

• Class C — Primarily an adversarial relationship. Hoya views Class D as too disorganized for genuine cooperation and seeks to keep it weak or control selected students within it. 10 14 42
• Hoya Chukai — Treats Class D as a source of pawns, intelligence, and future points; he recruits Kushida’s influence, protects Karuizawa to gain goodwill, and attempts to direct Ayanokoji’s attention toward Class A instead of Class C. 14 19 20 47
• Class B — Hoya’s planned Class B–Class C alliance is partly intended to avoid direct conflict between Classes B, C, and D while concentrating pressure on Class A. 14
• Class A — Hoya intends to use Class D as a tool against Class A, including provoking Class A students and exploiting Class D’s eventual growth when it becomes strategically useful. 14 48
• Chabashira Sae — Class D’s homeroom teacher. She openly disparages the class and challenges Horikita to prove that its students can rise above the school’s judgment. 26 27

Early Reputation

Class D is established as a chaotic, leaderless counterpart to the more structured Classes A, B, and C. Hoya immediately identifies it as a class likely to sabotage itself through poor behavior and point losses. 1 11

Hoya’s Search for Leverage

Hoya considers several Class D girls as possible points of influence, ultimately focusing on Kushida and Karuizawa because of their social reach. He concludes that controlling an influential girl could indirectly affect several male students. 10

Kushida’s Coercion

After discovering Kushida’s hidden behavior, Hoya forces her into serving his interests. He orders her to maintain influence over Class D and later uses her complaints as a detailed source of intelligence about the class’s internal problems. 19 47

Class D’s Internal Awakening

Chabashira reveals the nature of Class D’s position to Horikita, including the 20-million-point route to Class A. Horikita subsequently seeks Ayanokoji’s help, while Ayanokoji recognizes that the class must first suffer the consequences of its conduct before most students will listen. 27

Future Strategic Target

Class D remains a class Hoya intends to monitor rather than immediately destroy. He predicts it will eventually gain points and become worth targeting, while Class C publicly designates it as an object of vigilance. 42 48
