At a café, Kushida attempts to use Hoya as an excuse to approach Horikita. Horikita exposes the scheme, but Hoya publicly defends Kushida and argues with Horikita instead. Kushida is left unable to side with either of them without damaging her position. 11

Afterward, Hoya challenges her desire to “befriend everyone.” He persuades her that popularity and friendship are different goals, advising her to remain on good terms with most people rather than desperately seeking approval from everyone. Kushida is affected by this advice and begins reconsidering her motives. 12

Hoya later has Class C girls monitor Kushida’s movements, offering 5,000 points to anyone who reports suspicious nighttime activity. 16 When Kushida sneaks out to the back hill to vent, Hoya follows her and learns of her abusive private persona. 18

After her attempted false accusation fails, Hoya intimidates Kushida into agreeing to work for him. He adds himself to her phone contacts, promises point rewards for completed assignments, and offers his dorm as a safer place for her to vent. 19 She subsequently carries out tasks for him, including bringing Karuizawa Kei to a restroom for a staged bullying-and-rescue scheme. 20

Kushida continues helping Ayanokoji’s social adjustment and later uses Hoya’s dorm as a place to release her frustrations about Class D. Hoya treats these sessions as a source of intelligence on the class’s alliances, rivalries, and weak points. 14 18 47
