Ch. 361New mission
Key plot points and events
- Ishar identifies the miniature robots seen on Callisto as a vital part of the enemy’s strength. Though poor fighters, they may be exceptionally intelligent production workers. Twin Stars has no captured control chip to study, so she urges them to capture an intact robot if possible.
- Ishar argues that the All Things Unity Society may have occupied Earth and seized its population and robots. If so, Earth’s billions could provide both labor and cannon fodder, making a war of attrition dangerous.
- Nie Yun recognizes that Twin Stars is approaching the truth about Earth. He has spent considerable effort disguising the Solar System force’s origins and making Earth appear less threatening, since a direct assault by Gemini Civilization could overwhelm his defenses.
- Gustav proposes mass-producing drones and using them to wear down the Solar System’s defenses. Ishar supports the plan but recommends fighting while negotiating, using talks to probe the enemy.
- After the meeting, Nie Yun concludes that Twin Stars is still focused on the wormhole and is unlikely to destroy Earth, partly because life-bearing planets are too valuable. He decides to give them something else to occupy their attention.
- On Kara Star, three bedraggled Mithril Knights receive a new mission: find the wielder of the Demon Sword. One complains that it is preferable to another “local culture tour.”
Character developments and interactions
- Ishar demonstrates careful intelligence analysis, connecting the robots’ behavior, Earth’s religious gestures, and the possibility of a large human workforce. She challenges Gustav’s simple approach by pairing military pressure with negotiations.
- Gustav remains committed to direct, attritional warfare and proposes drone swarms as a practical way to consume the enemy’s resources.
- Nie Yun remains outwardly composed while privately weighing the risk of exposure. His priority is to protect Earth by keeping Twin Stars’ attention elsewhere.
- The Mithril Knights provide a brief comic counterpoint: weary from their previous ordeal, they accept the new quest mainly because it sounds less unpleasant.
Significant themes
- Intelligence and misdirection: Nie Yun’s strategy depends on hiding Earth’s importance, but Twin Stars’ analysis is closing in on the truth.
- Industrial strength and attrition: The conflict may be decided not only by weapons, but by production capacity, labor, and supplies.
- The value of inhabited worlds: Earth’s population and biosphere make it both a strategic asset and a potential target.
- Escalation and uncertainty: Nie Yun cannot rely solely on the wormhole’s defenses, since Twin Stars may find other ways to attack.
