|---|---|---|
| Land of Rain battlefield commander | 66 | Sent with Jiraiya to prevent the war from spreading into the Land of Fire. Selected for his broad capabilities and suitability for commanding large-scale warfare. |
| Fourth Hokage | 182 | Wins both the villagers’ and jōnin votes, receives the Land of Fire daimyo’s approval, and succeeds Hiruzen Sarutobi. This advancement grants village-wide authority rather than a documented new combat ability. |
Background / History
Orochimaru is Hiruzen Sarutobi’s student and the teammate of Tsunade and Jiraiya. Hiruzen regards him as a genius who appears only once every few decades; Jiraiya’s childhood jealousy develops into a continuing rivalry between them 22 37.
At his introduction, Orochimaru has not followed the original story’s descent into darkness. Natsuki recalls Nawaki’s death, forbidden experiments, and defection as events from that original history—not as events Orochimaru has undergone in this timeline 22.
Teaching Natsuki and Team 1
Already Nawaki’s teacher, Orochimaru meets Natsuki at the opening of his izakaya. After their meal and a group photograph, he instructs Natsuki to report to Training Ground 1 the following morning. Testing the boy’s swordsmanship changes his initially dismissive assessment: two of Natsuki’s three original sword techniques meet B-rank standards 22 23.
His instruction extends beyond combat. On missions, he teaches Natsuki and Nawaki to maintain sensory awareness and avoid open flames that could expose their position. He also encourages Natsuki’s pharmaceutical research while insisting that it must not delay his growth in strength 31 34.
Natsuki becomes his official student after demonstrating the original Yin Release technique Non-System Magic: Phantom Strike. Orochimaru later returns from the Land of Rain specifically to accompany Team 1—Natsuki, Nawaki, and Yakushi Nonō—during the Chūnin Exams 37 93.
Second Ninja World War
Orochimaru and Natsuki capture Suikazan Fuguki during Konoha’s defense of the Uzumaki Clan. Rather than claim all the credit, Orochimaru explains that Natsuki’s White Snake technique made the capture possible. He subsequently offers Natsuki Samehada as a reward, though Natsuki declines because it does not suit his fighting style 56 58.
On the Land of Rain front, Orochimaru commands Konoha’s forces and organizes responses to Hanzo’s poison. Before the final confrontation, he requests Curse Antidotes from Natsuki and reveals Amegakure’s planned poison attack at a jōnin meeting. Konoha prepares to abandon its camp, leave Shadow Clones as decoys, and defeat the attacking forces separately 82 127.
He fights Hanzo alongside Tsunade, Jiraiya, and Natsuki. During the battle, Natsuki pushes Orochimaru and Tsunade away from Hanzo’s explosive tags, protecting them from the blast. After victory, Orochimaru orders the battlefield cleared and helps locate Salamander Ibuse for Natsuki to capture 128 129 131.
Postwar Mentorship and Research
After the war, Orochimaru supports Natsuki’s ambition to become Hokage and offers to help him secure command of Anbu Fourth Squad. Their relationship increasingly becomes a partnership in which Natsuki contributes original techniques and pharmaceutical knowledge 132 134.
Orochimaru gives Natsuki and Nawaki access to Ryūchi Cave’s summoning contract but warns that its snakes may kill their own contractors. When Natsuki later attempts Sage Mode training, Orochimaru accompanies him and interrupts the lessons to share precautions learned from Jiraiya 134 176 177.
Becoming Fourth Hokage
With Tsunade and Hatake Sakumo withdrawing from consideration, Orochimaru receives the most jōnin nominations, ahead of Jiraiya and Natsuki. Hiruzen names Orochimaru and Jiraiya the two official candidates 180.
Orochimaru wins both subsequent votes by a substantial margin. His service as wartime commander-in-chief and reputation for recognizing talent help distinguish him from Jiraiya, whose frequent absences make him appear less reliable. Following daimyo approval, Hiruzen hands him the Hokage hat at a public succession ceremony 182.
Appearance
- Hair: Shoulder-length 22.
- Complexion: Pale skin 22.
- Eyes: Golden slit pupils with purple eyeshadow 22.
- Demeanor: Initially projects a cold, gloomy aura. After becoming Hokage, he adopts a somewhat more approachable public manner without fundamentally changing his personality 22 182.
Personality
Orochimaru is reserved, decisive, and rarely openly emotional. He usually speaks calmly, but offers direct praise when a student earns it. His ambition to master every technique makes him especially receptive to Natsuki’s inventions, which he regards as unusually well matched to his own interests 23 27 56 134.
His care for his students is practical rather than demonstrative. He teaches survival habits, warns them about dangerous summons, and shares knowledge intended to prevent failed Sage Mode training. He also protects Natsuki’s right to negotiate compensation for sharing original techniques with the Nara Clan 31 43 134 177.
His restraint does not make him gentle. He rejects using Konoha ninja or infants for Wood Release trials, yet accepts the proposed use of serious offenders from other villages. As Hokage, he is prepared to authorize Danzō’s death when defection threatens Konoha’s security 176 217.
Abilities & Skills
Swordsmanship
- Teaches Natsuki Konoha-style swordsmanship, Uchiha-style sword techniques, and his own unnamed sword style 34 45.
- Uses a Kusanagi Sword from his mouth to block Natsuki’s attack during their first training session 23.
- Launches the Kusanagi Sword like a projectile against Hanzo 128.
Snake Techniques and Summoning
- Myriad Snake Formation: Expels countless venomous snakes from his mouth. Against Hanzo, the snakes swim through the battlefield’s floodwater, though Ibuse intercepts and swallows them 129.
- Snake support: Controls a water snake that carries the four fighters to the surface after Hanzo floods the battlefield 129.
- Summoning coordination: Sends a small white snake to arrange reverse summoning through Rock Snake 176.
- Contract knowledge: Explains Ryūchi Cave’s dangers, the strength required to subdue its snakes, and the sacrifices demanded by Manda 134.
Ninjutsu Knowledge and Analysis
- Studies ninjutsu and secret techniques whenever he is not away on missions, pursuing mastery of every technique in the Ninja World 27.
- Understands the Nara Clan’s shadow techniques in the context of the Ino–Shika–Chō formation 27.
- Recognizes Space–Time Ninjutsu as an explanation for Natsuki’s rapid deployment of stored swords and identifies Minato’s chakra consumption as a decisive weakness 154.
- Receives Natsuki’s Konoha Six Powers scroll, then containing four techniques plus Armament Haki; the passage establishes receipt, not mastery 134.
Barriers and Battlefield Preparation
- Selects a concealed staging location and establishes a barrier before the operation against Amegakure 128.
- Coordinates troop positioning, poison countermeasures, decoys, and the interception of Hanzo 127 128.
- Orders the fighters to separate after Hanzo disappears underwater, allowing the others to assist whoever is ambushed 129.
Sage Mode Knowledge
- Has attempted but failed to learn Sage Mode 134.
- Possesses theoretical knowledge obtained from Jiraiya, including the dangers of natural energy and Snake Transformation 177.
- Uses that knowledge to advise Natsuki, but is not shown acquiring Sage Mode himself 177.
Research
Wood Release and Hashirama Cells
| Development | Chapter | Details |
|---|---|---|
| Research restarted | 134 | Proposes that Natsuki’s Red Healing Potion could counter the destructive vitality of Hashirama’s cells, which had killed recipients in earlier transplant experiments. |
| Animal trials | 176 | Experiments on gorillas before considering human trials. Rejects Konoha ninja and infants as subjects. |
| Projected military application | 205 | Predicts success within the year and considers forming a Wood Release ninja unit. |
| Transplant ready | 214 | Announces that Nawaki can receive the procedure, while acknowledging that Wood Release itself is less powerful than its legends suggest. |
| Successful recipients | 215 | Nawaki and Tsunade awaken Wood Release after transplantation. Nawaki demonstrates it by making a flower bloom. |
| Procedure taught to others | 215 | Begins training Tsunade, Nawaki, Natsuki, and Nonō in the transplant method and requests a month of monitoring for complications. |
| Further application | 216 | Allows selection of another recipient; Kushina agrees to a transplant performed by Natsuki and Nonō. |
- The project reproduces access to Wood Release; it does not establish that Orochimaru awakens the ability himself 215.
- An elite medical jōnin can learn the successful transplant procedure with instruction 215.
Human Life Extension
After completing the Wood Release experiments and teaching the transplant procedure, Orochimaru turns to extending human lifespans. He admits that he has no concrete lead and is experimenting without high expectations; no successful life-extension technique is documented 217.
Hokage Administration
Departments and Appointments
| Initiative | Purpose and appointments | Chapter |
|---|---|---|
| Central research department | Concentrates Konoha’s experimental funding and personnel. Other departments, including Root, must submit their experimental plans to Hokage oversight. | 182 183 |
| Hokage Guard Squad | Reestablishes a guard organization modeled on Tobirama’s unit. Initial members: Natsuki, Nawaki, Yakushi Nonō, Namikaze Minato, Uzumaki Kae, and Inuzuka Sparrow. | 183 |
| Hokage Secretary Department | Delegates routine administration to Natsuki, Minato, Nara Shikaku, and Uchiha Mikoto, freeing Orochimaru to continue research. | 183 184 |
| Medical and orphanage leadership | Appoints Nonō deputy director of Konoha Hospital and director of Konoha Orphanage, replacing the aging Zhenyou in the latter position. | 183 |
| Hokage Aide succession | Removes Danzō and appoints Natsuki to the position. Dissolves Root and transfers its ninja to the Anbu. | 216 |
Relations with Root and the Uchiha
- Overcomes Danzō’s objections to centralized research by invoking village rules and his authority as Hokage 182.
- Secures approval for Mikoto’s secretarial appointment despite Danzō’s opposition, with support from Homura, Koharu, and the assembled jōnin 183.
- Mikoto’s appointment improves the Uchiha Clan’s view of the Hokage administration and gives it direct access to central leadership 184.
- After evidence exposes Danzō’s forbidden human experiments, accepts Hiruzen’s request to spare his life while stripping his offices 216.
- When informed of Danzō’s apparent defection, orders Natsuki to retrieve him “dead or alive” because of the village secrets he possesses 217.
War Preparedness

- Requests a Chūnin Exam before worsening international tensions develop into open hostilities 205.
- Orders increased surveillance of Kumogakure and Iwagakure as the most likely villages to attack Konoha 214.
