Background / History
Thanatos is an ancient ruler of the Netherworld who spends much of her time seeking amusement rather than researching ultimate techniques. She conceals her identity as the red-haired owner of Nether Hotel at the foot of Nether Mountain, where she enjoys fishing 33 34 112.
After learning that Ren was being pursued by the Four Divine Beasts Clan, she arranged a test: Asers, Jin, and Yin were to guard the Nether Fruit, and she would consider Ren as an envoy if he could take one from them 35. Ren passed and revealed that he sought protection from the clan's Sovereigns. Thanatos accepted him as her fourth envoy, granted him an offensive Sovereign Artifact, and supplied Sovereign Power and parchment with which to summon her 38 39.
When the Azure Dragon and White Tiger Sovereigns confronted Ren after his battle with their clan, Thanatos descended and declared him her envoy. She rejected their demand that he be punished, and they withdrew 45 46. Ren's recruitment also gave her a Paragon envoy of her own—a point of satisfaction after the Death-rule Paragon Dannington had become Uterede's envoy instead 39 48.

Thanatos presents herself as a young, beautiful red-haired woman, both at Nether Hotel and on her throne 34 38.

Thanatos enjoys teasing others and watching their reactions. At Nether Hotel, she lets Ren believe he has identified her as a Prefect and anticipates his surprise at learning who she is. She later visits Uterede partly to enjoy his reaction to her recruitment of Ren 34 48.
She is protective of her envoy and openly contemptuous of the Four Divine Beasts Sovereigns' appeal to clan reputation 46. Behind that confidence, she worries about the balance of power among the Rule Overlords, particularly the possibility of Uterede obtaining the Four Divine Beasts' Essence Blood 92 94.
