After observing Gallo Channing's knowledge-navigation service at Moonlight Cafe, Vanason tests him with his own book. Gallo's rapid and detailed analysis persuades Vanason to regard him not merely as a gifted street youth, but as a scholar who can be treated as a peer. 12

When Jeffrey returns from an expedition to the former political center of the Askia Dynasty, Vanason finds him exhausted, fearful, and obsessively focused on his materials. Concerned by Jeffrey's condition, he takes preliminary documents and rubbings to Gallo for analysis. Gallo concludes that Jeffrey has uncovered evidence pointing to a terrifying supernatural cause behind the Askia Dynasty's collapse. 13 14 15

Vanason initially dismisses Jeffrey's theory as absurd and worries that Jeffrey's beliefs could affect his students. Nevertheless, he continues trying to understand Jeffrey's work, obtains Jeffrey's notes on Askia hieroglyphs, and considers reporting his colleague's worsening mental state to the university administration. 15 16 18

After Jeffrey disappears from the university, Vanason investigates his apartment and discovers the completely carbonized study and Jeffrey's corpse. Clovin agents seize control of the scene, order him to forget what he witnessed, forbid further investigation, and demand that he decipher a notebook found on Jeffrey's body. Unable to translate it himself, Vanason identifies Gallo as the person capable of doing so. 20 21 22

Malcolm later impersonates a Clovin officer and exploits Vanason's fear to pressure him over Jeffrey's notes. Terrified, Vanason flees and hides in an inn in his hometown; Clovin's Third Bureau later finds him and clarifies the circumstances of his disappearance. 23 42 47
