Background and History
The Uchiha ancestral land lies around the lower Naka River, where Naka Shrine stands. Driven from the Naka Plain roughly three hundred years earlier, the clan spent generations on a northeastern peninsula. Madara and his brother later reclaimed the shrine’s site; peace between the Uchiha and Senju after a major war became the starting point of the ninja-village era 186.
The clan helped found Konoha with the Senju. Madara, a former clan head, defected after its founding and later attacked the village, but the Uchiha did not follow him. Early clan opinion criticized his conduct and supported Hashirama; later dissatisfaction with the clan’s position made some members more receptive to his legacy 1 2 124.
A ten-year ideological conflict began shortly after Tobirama became Second Hokage. Some Uchiha opposed him and began venerating Madara. The resulting civil war killed many skilled members, while use of forbidden eye techniques left others blind. Although the fighting ended, grievances about Tobirama and the clan’s status persisted 121 126.
Abilities and Clan Practices
Sharingan
The Sharingan is the Uchiha’s inherited eye technique. Awakening and evolution are closely associated with intense emotion, but many ordinary clansmen never awaken it at all 8 9 29.
- Combat and learning — It improves dynamic vision, supports genjutsu, and allows users to copy suitable ninjutsu and movements. Higher tomoe levels permit more demanding techniques 8 9.
- Eye inclinations — The clan distinguishes Ninjutsu, Genjutsu, and rarer Enhancement Eyes. Their differences are relatively small at the tomoe stage but become more pronounced at the Mangekyō stage 8 9.
- Mangekyō Sharingan — Kept secret from most clansmen because its awakening is tied to severe emotional harm and its use damages the eyes. It is not treated as routine combat power 9 121 266.
- Collective genjutsu — Three Uchiha using Sharingan genjutsu together suppress Roshi’s connection to the Four-Tails enough to prevent full transformation, but cannot fully control him 323.
Inherited Techniques
- Copied ninjutsu — The clan passes down a broad repertoire through successive Sharingan users copying techniques from one another. Techniques that depend on rare elemental talent and three-tomoe users are vulnerable to being lost if their holders die 10 221.
- Uchiha Style Taijutsu — A system built around Sharingan dynamic vision, particularly parrying or dodging before counterattacking. Copying its movements does not replace physical practice 10.
- Fire Style training — Nearly every clan member has Fire Style chakra. Advanced training can use emotionally stimulated Sharingan power to influence chakra transformation, though the method consumes substantial ocular power and is less systematic than basic instruction 8 19.
- Forbidden techniques — The clan preserves Izanagi and Izanami, powerful techniques taught to Akaseki with warnings about their price. Excessive forbidden-technique use contributed to blindness during the civil war 121 221.
Organization and Village Role
- Military Police Force — Most Uchiha enter the force after reaching Chūnin. Its village-management duties shape clan teaching that protecting the village matters more than completing missions for their own sake 4 21.
- Naka Shrine meetings — Regular meetings introduce young members, report strength breakthroughs, and address political matters. Members generally avoid directly congratulating a Sharingan awakening because it often follows grief or rage 29.
- Clan leadership — Clan Head Jiancheng directs political and military decisions. Elders including Lanyu and Kagami train younger members and advise on clan affairs 8 29 207.
- Succession — The clan has no fixed main-family and branch-family division; its clan-head line has changed repeatedly 130.
- Other obligations — The clan maintains a long-term private mission guarding the imprisoned Chinoike Clan at Hell Valley, outside Konoha’s mission accounts 186.
Major Arcs
Tension with Konoha’s leadership
The Uchiha hoped Kagami might eventually become Hokage and reacted angrily when Tobirama instead named Hiruzen Sarutobi as his successor. Despite their initial dissatisfaction, the clan and other major clans ultimately supported Hiruzen, helping preserve Konoha’s unity after the Uzumaki Clan’s destruction 1 42.
Distrust sharpened when Jiancheng’s request for information about Danzō’s secret organization was refused. In a later confrontation involving Root, the clan pressured the Hokage, arrested four Root members, and tortured them to death. Akaseki opposed the outcome but could not change the leadership’s decision; Hiruzen regarded the killings as an attack on fellow Konoha ninja 29 90 91.
Wartime losses
Following Kagami’s death, Jiancheng ordered eligible Uchiha into three-to-five-person combat squads while keeping members under sixteen off the front line. Police duties were reduced for training. The clan’s casualties later exceeded Konoha’s overall rate proportionally, threatening its pool of experienced Sharingan users and the techniques they preserved 207 219 221.
Relationships
- Senju Clan — Former battlefield opponents and fellow founders of Konoha; Tobirama’s leadership remained a source of Uchiha grievance 1 186.
- Hiruzen Sarutobi — Initially a disputed successor, later supported by the clan during a period of village instability; subsequent conflicts over Root renewed tensions 29 42 91.
- Shimura Danzō and Root — Objects of deep clan suspicion. Root’s secrecy and confrontations with Uchiha members escalated into the deaths of four Root operatives 29 91.
- Madara Uchiha — Former clan head and Konoha co-founder who defected. The clan’s view of him shifted from condemnation toward a more favorable memory among some dissatisfied members 1 124.
- Akaseki Uchiha — A young Sharingan user trained through clan inheritance despite serving on Jiraiya’s team rather than following the usual police route 3 10 29.
