Background / History

Richie was originally a condemned “sinner” awaiting execution. After witnessing a divine miracle, he rallied other prisoners and dissidents to resist the Tribe’s ruling chief. A week of fighting ended when Richie emerged from the chief’s cave carrying the former chief’s severed head and placed the Helmet of Power upon himself, becoming the Tribe’s new ruler 2.

His first acts as chief were severe. He purged the former chief’s bloodline, ordering the former chief’s children sent to the mountain for a painless death, while pardoning people branded as criminals under the old regime. He retained the elders because he recognized he could not rebuild the Tribe alone 2.

Richie led the Tribe through famine by personally organizing expeditions across cliffs, wastelands, and the island’s dangerous regions. After two years, hunger was driven from the island; the people’s expectations rose beyond survival, and new professions began emerging 2.

He opened access to the sea, enabling fishing and the rise of the Fisherman profession. During a freshwater shortage, he authorized an expedition into the forbidden Mangrove Forest in search of water-bearing fruit, acting on his promise to treat every tribesperson kindly 3.

Richie established contribution-based distribution of Return Fruits, rewarding hunting, medicine, weaving, fishing, and other useful work. He also commissioned larger temples and altars while ending human sacrifice 4.

As the Tribe developed, Richie promoted Barlow to captain of the guard, elevated Blair for his inventions, delegated coastal affairs to Blair, and supported the construction of weapons, defenses, temples, and boats 5 9 11 21.

He married Naen, a formerly imprisoned white-haired woman, despite the elders’ objections. Naen died giving birth to their twin sons, Ned and Boer; afterward, Richie became quieter and increasingly devoted himself to raising and preparing the boys for their future responsibilities 11 12 13.

In old age, Richie gradually ceded practical authority to Boer but retained control over temple matters. He named the completed mountaintop Wonder the Temple of Eternity and appointed Huxter as its priest 26.

After Ned received the Rot Spirit Flower’s power, Richie affirmed Boer as the next chieftain while recognizing Ned’s separate role as a God-Chosen power wielder. He encouraged Ned to pursue his own path without wasting the power granted to him 29.

Richie eventually lost the ability to walk and withdrew from coastal work because of worsening illness. Before his death, he urged Boer to find his own way and seek Ned’s help when necessary. He died peacefully after the Tribe’s victory over the Sea Monster 33 37.
