Background & History

Ned is Richie's eldest son and Boer's older brother. As a child, he was reserved, rarely initiated conversations, and preferred observing insects or staring quietly into the forest. He inherited his mother Naen's distinctive gray-white hair and was strongly drawn to the Stone Flower—later the Rot Spirit Flower—often sleeping peacefully beside it. 18

At nineteen, Ned’s withdrawn nature changed into an affable, restless personality. He became popular among the clan for casually socializing with workers and youths, but he quickly moved on whenever life ceased to feel new or interesting. Despite his reputation, he and Boer remained close, and both brothers were regarded as benevolent toward the tribe. 24

Ned’s prospects as chieftain were damaged when he secretly brewed wine, fought an elder’s son who insulted Naen, and severely injured the youth’s eye during the struggle. Ned accepted responsibility for drinking, initiating the duel, and inflicting the injury; he was punished, including the loss of a finger, and became estranged from much of the tribe. He later stopped drinking, married Yami, and withdrew to a cabin in the forest, where he returned to studying Rot Spirit Insects. 24 29

While resting near the Rot Spirit Flower, Ned dreamed of a child-like divine messenger and received the Rot Spirit Staff. After binding it with his blood, he could perceive and command Rot Spirit Insects as though they were extensions of his body. 28

Ned initially feared that the divine gift would force him into the leadership duties he had spent his life avoiding. He confessed to Richie that he wanted freedom, novelty, and the chance to see the world beyond the island. Richie accepted this honestly and allowed Boer to become chieftain, while Ned chose to serve the tribe through the power he had received. 29

Appearance

Ned is noted for his fine gray-white hair, inherited from his mother Naen and regarded as striking within the tribe. 18 24

  • His unusual hair color made him resemble Naen and attracted attention from young women in the tribe. 18 24
  • He was trained by Barlow and developed the physique and skill needed to defeat an elder’s son in a duel. 24
  • Repeated use of Decay Power can blacken, numb, and partially rot the palm holding the Rot Spirit Staff. 30 49

Personality

Ned is driven by curiosity and a deep desire to encounter unfamiliar places, creatures, and ways of life. He resisted administrative duty because he found no joy in settling disputes, auditing supplies, or allocating food; instead, he dreamed of sailing beyond the island even if the journey cost him his life. 29

His freedom-loving nature initially made him negligent as a husband and father. Yami recounts that he once left their child in a tree while he slept below, and that he competed with the child for a slingshot. 28 However, Ned becomes increasingly deliberate as his responsibilities grow, especially when leading explorers and protecting settlers on Giant Tree Island. 46 49

Ned’s faith is sincere but not boastful. When asked whether his god was the strongest being in the world, he answered that he did not know, believing mortals had no right to judge powers they could not understand. He respected the Cave Dweller King’s unwavering devotion while still opposing the king’s sacrifices and rule. 54

After nearly unleashing the Black Bird relic’s corrupting power, Ned acknowledged his own arrogance and ignorance. The incident made him more cautious toward unknown forces and more humble before divine power. 56 58

Abilities & Skills

Nature Affinity

Ned possesses Nature Affinity lv1, a talent that helps him understand natural principles and the languages of living beings. 30

  • Enables unusually rapid mastery of insect-related powers that ordinary humans struggle to comprehend. 30
  • Helps him learn basic Cave Dweller vocabulary and communicate with them within two months. 52
  • Supports his interest in insects, scouting, and experimentation. 18 28

Rot Spirit Manipulation

Through the Rot Spirit Staff, Ned can sense, communicate with, and command Rot Spirit Insects. 28

  • Early on, he can command approximately seven or eight small insects up to one hundred meters away. 28
  • Uses Water Mosquitoes to observe ripples on the sea surface and detect fish schools or larger approaching creatures. 29
  • Uses Yamal Spiders and poisonous insects as coordinated ambush forces against giant monsters. 33 35
  • Converts Giant Tree Island Stink Bugs into Rot Spirit Insects for safer reconnaissance in the forest. 50
  • Seawater corrodes Rot Spirit Mycelium, preventing him from commanding insects once they dive beneath the surface. 29

Decay Power

The Rot Spirit Staff can induce rapid decay in objects it touches while Ned is wielding it. 30

  • Can rot or weaken most materials, though extremely hard stones can resist its effects. 30
  • Can be transmitted into sturdy black stone to create Decay Arrows that soften and shatter even giant creatures’ carapaces. 49
  • Decay Power applied to prepared arrows remains active for roughly two to three days. 49
  • Strong use causes backlash to Ned’s palm, including blackening, numbness, muscle dissolution, and rot. 30 49
  • Ned used a Decay Arrow to kill the Cave Dweller King. 54

Shell Insect Command

Ned bears the brand of the Shell Insect, a giant insect capable of traveling through the sea. 43

  • A single brand allows control of one giant insect. 43
  • Ned uses the Shell Insect to explore ocean waters, uncovering coral reefs, Hermit Crab eggs, and ancient fossils. 43
  • The Shell Insect serves as a battlefield weapon and deterrent against Cave Dwellers. 51 53
  • Ned can perceive information retained in the Shell Insect’s memories of the sea. 43

Divine Art: Decaying Life Power

Ned develops Decaying Life Power, later referred to as Withered Life Power, by understanding Decay as a form of forced life growth rather than simple destruction. 61 68 74

  • Temporarily enhances physical strength, reaction speed, movement, hearing, vision, and bodily perception. 61
  • Allows rapid healing by overdrawing life force; Ned visibly heals a cut palm after testing the art. 61
  • May heal otherwise fatal injuries, but doing so consumes lifespan. 61
  • Ned does not know the precise lifespan cost and initially downplays the danger to reassure others. 61
  • He recognized the possibility of transferring life force between people as too dangerous and never taught that application to Authority Bearers. 74

Divine Art: Rot Root Seed

Ned develops Rot Root Seed to implant Decay Power into other people through a ritual. 66

  • Requires ritual potion made from Rot Spirit Flower mycelium, Rot Spirit Insect corpses, Shell Insect shells, and ancient wood capable of bearing a trace of Decay Power. 64
  • Creates Authority Bearers, including Lukar, Belei, and a priest from the Island of Eternity. 66
  • Poor integration can cause severe physical consequences, such as Lukar’s fragile skin and Belei’s rotting legs. 66 68
  • Ned remains the only person known to wield the Divine Art of Bestowal. 91

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Rot Spirit Staff — Divine staff bestowed through the Rot Spirit Flower’s messenger; enables insect manipulation and Decay Power. 28 30
  • Shell Insect brand — Allows Ned to command one Shell Insect. 43
  • Black Stone Arrows / Decay Arrows — Black stone arrows infused with Decay Power for use against giant creatures. 49
  • Traveler’s Torch — Sacred object used by Ned when he leaves Giant Tree Island to seek fire spirits. 82

  • Naen — Mother. Ned inherited her gray-white hair and fiercely defended her memory when she was insulted. 18 24
  • Boer — Younger brother and fellow leader. Though their temperaments differ sharply, they share a strong bond; Boer becomes chieftain while Ned takes on a separate divine role. 24 29
  • Yami — Wife. She is frustrated by Ned’s unreliable parenting but remains the woman who continued visiting him after his estrangement from the tribe. 24 28
  • Lukar — Son and later successor as chief. Lukar supports Ned’s voyage despite fearing for him, becomes Ned’s first ritual recipient, and succeeds him after Ned abdicates. 46 66 82
  • Barlow — Teacher, guard captain, and expedition companion. Ned was Barlow’s student and later relies on his archery and protection during exploration. 24 49 50
  • Blair — Respected Artisan and adviser. Blair shares Ned’s fascination with the sea and helps identify useful insects on Giant Tree Island. 41 50
  • Priest Moro — Priest and expedition ally. Moro’s ability to read emotions and thoughts helps Ned communicate with the Cave Dwellers. 45 52
  • Belei — Authority Bearer whom Ned empowers through the Ritual. Ned later regrets overlooking Belei’s impatience and instability. 66 68 81
  • Cave Dweller Thirty-Two / Wood Lump — A captured Cave Dweller Ned treats without prejudice and permits to become Blair’s apprentice. 55 60

Story Role / Major Arcs

Coastal Defense

After receiving the Rot Spirit Staff, Ned joins the coastal patrol instead of contesting Boer's succession. He scouts the sea with Water Mosquitoes and later organizes poisonous insects, Yamal Spiders, and tribesmen against giant monsters landing on the shore. His leadership restores the tribe’s courage during the battle. 29 35

Opening the Sea

Ned advocates shipbuilding over immediate domestic priorities, gathering followers and personally ensuring they understand the dangers of the first voyage. Forty volunteers ultimately remain for the expedition. 45 46

After reaching Giant Tree Island, Ned leads its exploration, prepares Decay Arrows against giant creatures, and uses Rot Spirit Insects to detect human-like inhabitants. 49 50

Cave Dweller Conflict and Integration

Ned uses the Shell Insect to repel Cave Dweller attacks, then works with Moro to understand their language, fears, culture, and belief in the Black Bird. 51 52

He defeats the Cave Dweller King but orders the king buried with dignity because he recognizes the king’s faith, even while rejecting his actions. 54 After the Black Bird relic nearly corrupts him, Ned accepts surviving Cave Dwellers as believers of his god while keeping them under constant insect surveillance. 56 58 60

Chief of Giant Tree Island

By the time Giant Tree Island develops into a permanent settlement, Ned serves as its chief and focuses on its construction, resources, and coexistence with Cave Dwellers. 63

Concerned by the tribe’s weakening martial discipline and the dangers of future ocean exploration, he establishes the Ritual for creating Authority Bearers and orders the construction of the Megalith Arena. 64 65 Upon the arena’s completion, he uses its competitions to identify warriors for future sea expeditions. 67

Abdication

After the consequences of Belei’s misuse of power and the wider crisis that follows, Ned questions whether he was suited to leadership. 81 He eventually abdicates, leaving Giant Tree Island under Lukar’s leadership while departing alone with the Traveler’s Torch to search for fire spirits. 82
