Background / History
Blair was a frail but exceptionally inventive young craftsman whose work included fishing nets and a modified stone sling for Barlow. Mona identified him as a Scholar whose rich spirituality allowed him to faintly sense manifestations of divine power. Although awkward and nervous around visitors, Blair became animated whenever discussing his creations. 5 6
After Chief Richie visited his workshop, Blair requested sacred redwood as a crafting material. Richie refused to let him cut a living Red Tree, but promised him a charred piece of lightning-struck redwood if he could demonstrate his value to the Tribe. Blair united competing artisans under his instruction, producing improved hoes, ladders, and roller boards before receiving the wood. 6
Blair named the material Thunder-Struck Wood and spent months studying its paralyzing current. His research produced the Lightning Bow, the Tribe's first true ranged weapon and a holy relic. He was subsequently promoted to elder, and its military value was proven through Barlow's use against dangerous creatures. 7 8 9
Richie later entrusted Blair with coastal affairs, including care of the Return Fruit Trees. Blair taught one of Richie's sons and led the construction of the Driftwood Boat, which could carry two people across the sea. He also made Richie a crutch as the chief's legs weakened. 11 13 14
The destruction of the Driftwood Boat by a sea monster plunged Blair into despair. Realizing how little he understood of the sea and the wider world, he withdrew from elder meetings. Richie helped him accept that merely seeing the “mountain” of the world's mysteries had value; Blair returned to work and organized coastal watchtowers, warning whistles, and weapons for the Tribe's defense. 21 22
In old age, Blair resigned as an elder and returned to a solitary seaside life, where he shared memories of Richie with Ned. He later joined an expedition to Giant Tree Island, partly to satisfy his own enduring desire to explore. There he took Cave Dweller Thirty-Two as an apprentice, named him Wood Lump, and treated him as a son. 41 60 69 71
Blair became one of the first victims of the expedition's plague. His divine perception exposed Belei's deception and life-stealing forbidden art, allowing him to warn Wood Lump before Belei killed him. After Blair's death, Wood Lump inherited his craft and became the island's chief artisan. 73 74 84
Appearance
Blair began as a frail young man working in a rundown stone house. In old age, years bent over his work left him stooped and gaunt; he relied on a cane and often suffered from seasickness during voyages. 5 21 41 48
- Kept a messy workshop crowded with tools, materials, and unfinished objects. 6 21
- Had bloodshot eyes and an emaciated appearance after months studying Thunder-Struck Wood. 7
- In later life, wore stubble and had a withered arm, stooped back, wrinkled hands, and cloudy eyes. 21 71
Personality
Blair was driven by curiosity, craftsmanship, and a desire to understand the world. He was initially shy and stiff around others, yet became eloquent and excited when explaining his inventions. His willingness to share techniques with other artisans made him a central source of practical knowledge in the Tribe. 6
He was humble about his creations and regarded Thunder-Struck Wood as a resource belonging to the entire Tribe rather than to himself. Even after his despair over the sea monster and the loss of his boat, he returned to work because he believed he could not waste time while the Tribe needed defenses. 7 21 22
In old age, Blair distinguished personal ambition from religious devotion. He did not condemn human desire, but rejected using the gods’ name to justify selfish goals or wrongdoing. This conviction remained intact when he confronted Belei's atrocities. 71 74
