Oliver and Two "Disappearances"
Hope was almost certain that the handwriting came from Number One Hope.
Blood and the Transparent Monster ---- What is the Transparent Monster? Is it a safe that only recognizes blood? ----
Of all the people Hope could think of who would leave a message in this way, only Number One Hope came to mind.
Of all the Hope, he was the one who understood the Transparent Monster Transparent Monster the most, and was probably the one who was closest to it.
Hope had to lie down to see the characters made of black slime.
It's an introduction about a person:
Oliver Whateley
A familiar name... Is this... the neighbor of Skull No. 1 in the Skull Museum?
The Dunwich cultists who were killed by Professor Armitage decades ago.
Hope also speculated that he and the Whateley House were enemies.
But his last name Whateley " —Hope immediately thought of his great-uncle, the younger brother of Old Whateley.
But the following comments indicated that Oliver was someone else:
Oliver Whateley.
I stumbled upon this name, which had almost been erased from the the Whateley family's record, but after visiting some elderly people in Dunwich, I discovered that the name was practically a household name forty years ago.
Oliver the old wizard, my great-grandfather, a powerful Extraordinary who had ascended four times. Even the most uninformed Dunwich had heard of his terrifying legends.
Hope paused her reading for a moment.
"An extraordinary being who has undergone four ascensions— Hope recalled hearing about the Ascension Ritual from Skull No. 1."
According to the Skull No. 1, the Ascension Ritual seems to improve attributes.
Four stages of sublimation—I wonder whose attribute is higher, this one's or Professor Armitage's?
Although Oliver died at the hands of Professor Armitage, Hope couldn't think of anything a higher-level Self-Sense could do besides becoming all-seeing and all-hearing.
Professor Armitage's victory was likely due more to his magic and spells.
Hope read on, and just as he had expected, it mentioned Oliver's fate:
My great-grandfather died at the hands of Professor Armitage of Miskatonic University.
But what followed was different from Hope had imagined:
However, I suspect he did it on purpose. He deliberately allowed himself to be killed by Professor Armitage.
The Whateley family possesses a magic passed down through generations: the ability to disappear.
Passed down through generations—it seems there's another way to pass magic on to others besides "exchange," but—
Vanish—wasn't that the magic of Skull No. 1?
Could it be that the Skull No. 1 was obtained through an exchange with Oliver, a process known as "disappearance"? Thinking about it this way, the memory blocking phenomenon after leaving Dunwich does indeed seem like the work of "disappearance."
No, that's not right— Skull No. 1 is already shattered—since the others have recovered their memories of Elizabeth, there's no reason why the disappearance of the the Whateley family should continue.
Unable to come up with a reasonable answer, Hope continued reading:
The magic of "disappearance" had completely vanished by my generation. I learned about it from the diary of an elder in the family. It is speculated that its last possessor was Oliver.
Interestingly, in the diary of that family elder, although only "disappeared" was mentioned, he claimed that the Whateley House was a family that possessed two kinds of magic.
For some time afterward, I tried to find out what the other magic in my family was, but I couldn't find any records of it until I later learned some knowledge about magic from other books.
The knowledge is that "multiple spells may have the same name," and these spells with the same name will have some similarities, but they are definitely not exactly the same.
"Disappearance" could very well be two different spells with the same name.
In retrospect, the descriptions of "disappearance" do indeed differ across different accounts, and even within the same account. To summarize, one applies to the soul of a living being, while the other applies to the more ethereal concept of fate.
Hope blinked.
Is it a spell with the same name but different effects? -- If so, the one possessed by Skull No. 1 is clearly the one applicable to the soul, while the other --
Destiny— Hope wanted to know more about this magic.
But then Number One Hope, suddenly brought up something else.
In the more glorious era of the the Whateley family, they also possessed a formidable skill. Like blacksmiths, carpenters, and stonemasons, the Whateley family could then be known as the "Bonewright Family."
The "bones" here specifically refer to human skulls. The ancestors of the the Whateley family possessed the ability to craft extraordinary items from the skulls of extraordinary individuals.
Oliver Whateley appears to be one of the best, and also the last person to possess this skill.
"My family has fallen on hard times," Hope thought for no apparent reason.
Creating skulls—that's quite a cult-like ability!
The last possessor of this ability—ah, the two "disappeared"—was also because Oliver didn't pass it on—
He's practically the culprit behind the family's downfall!
Hope suddenly felt a pang of pity for Old Whateley; it seemed the the Whateley family had once been quite prominent among the cultists—yet Old Whateley's father hadn't passed anything down to him.
"If my speculation is correct, Oliver's last work should be himself."
He must have sealed the two "disappearance" spells into his own skull while he was still alive.
He then deliberately revealed his cultist identity, which attracted the Professor Armitage, who was his equal.
He had already foreseen his fate. Because of the tradition at Miskatonic University, Professor Armitage would take his skull back to the university campus after killing him.
Sealed within his skull were two "disappearing" spells: one that would erase people's memories of the the Whateley family, and the other that would erase all things unfavorable to the Whateley ' fate—
It was detrimental to Whateley's fate—which is why Hope ignored the note containing the the Whateley family's secrets and subconsciously overlooked the contents of his Memorandum.
If that's the case—the disappearance of Skull No. 1 did indeed originate from Oliver; I wonder what he traded for it—
Phew, Hope remembered that he hadn't recalled the Memorandum when he looked at Oliver's skull, but perhaps the exchange "was indeed usable."
The Skull No. 1 once said that disappearing "something important will take a lot of time."
Oliver couldn't stay on the Miskatonic University campus for long periods of time, so he used this method.
The soul's disappearance is no longer in Oliver's skull; the memory of the the Whateley family being blocked—is it because of the disappearance of destiny?
Because of the malice towards the Whateley House, that part of his memory was erased—unlike the disappearance of a soul, which affects everyone.
The disappearance of fate----
Hope plans to go to the Skull Museum to destroy the skull, or to "exchange" the disappearing one from the skull—if he can do it.
