Rescue Arrives from the Rooftop
Through the gaps between the wooden planks, Hope saw a black shadow, incongruous with the tawny earth, recede into the distance.
From the faint sound he barely managed to overhear, he could tell it must have been Dr. Morgan.
Hopefully, the note will work.
Hope ate the bread with the sausage inside; if the bread was still warm, this would be the best meal he'd had recently.
But now, it is indeed a bit dry.
Hope found the kettle lying to the side, intending to pour some water from it, only to discover it was empty.
Hope drank all the water herself around noon.
"Lavinia!" Hope shouted.
He felt like an rude patient yelling at a caregiver—a situation that usually indicates discord between the two parties.
But Hope really didn't have any better way to get Lavinia upstairs.
After Wilbur left, Hope realized how important it was that someone remembered to change the prisoners' water on time.
Lavinia, however, clearly couldn't do that; she always assumed Hope could survive on canned peas.
"I'm still a little hungry," Hope said.
"But—" Lavinia's eyes darted away, "That gentleman only brought this one piece of bread."
"Come on, "Hope thought to herself.
He knew that Lavinia must have secretly kept some more.
But he didn't really care.
He was already quite surprised that Lavinia would even think of sending him some.
"A can of peas will do," Hope said. "Of course, it would be even better if it were a little warmed up."
In any case, these yellowish-green salted beans are still quite filling.
Lavinia brought canned peas and a jug of water.
In addition, she also brought two newspapers.
These are the two subscriptions that Old Whateley subscribed to before he died. Although Old Whateley is dead, he had already paid for a whole year in advance.
Although Lavinia could no longer get food from Hope, she still brought the newspaper.
It was probably because Wilbur was so harsh on her that she wanted to find someone to huddle with for comfort.
So after Old Whateley died, she became much nicer to Hope.
Hope crumpled the edges of the newspaper, feeling the texture of the paper.
He wasn't really in the mood to read the newspaper; his unease and anxiety were also causing his sleep quality to deteriorate.
Although trapped here and unable to leave, Hope could deduce that Wilbur must be facing his final moments.
This was practically his last chance to stop him.
Unfortunately, Hope knew that besides passing the time and waiting for the result, there was nothing he could actually do.
"Uncertainty cannot be used," he couldn't even leave the room.
----Reading the newspaper.
The most intimate interactions between the the Whateley family mother and sons took place here:
One person held a newspaper and sat on either side of the bed, saying nothing.
Hope finished reading the New Federation Post first, but nothing interested him.
After Lavinia finished reading, they exchanged their newspapers.
These two newspapers must be read very carefully, because this is the only pastime Hope has each day.
They whiled away nearly two hours this way.
Suddenly, there was a rapid knocking on the door downstairs, Lavinia stood up unhappily.
Hope finally found something that interested him.
A report about Miskatonic University published in Arkham GG-Man.
This article had very little space in the newspaper compared to previous reports about the university.
A group of fisheries science professors from Miskatonic University traveled to the Innsmouth to Communication with fishermen who have lived there for hundreds of years.
Centuries----
According to the history of the New Federation, if it were white fishermen, this so-called "several hundred years" should not exceed three hundred years.
To Hope's surprise, unlike his previous praise of Miskatonic University, this time, <Arkham GG-Man> used a rare critical tone.
The author suggests that the professors chose the wrong place this time, and in the following text, the writer seems to express some concern for the professors' safety.
Is Innsmouth such a desolate and impoverished place—could it be worse Dunwich?
Hope was just about to ask Lavinia about Innsmouth when she remembered she had already gone to Door Opening.
Has she been gone for too long?
Hope pressed his ear against the crack in the door, a movement that alerted the Transparent Monster, but Hope waved his hand to silence it.
I didn't hear any conversation.
Hope frowned.
He hesitated for a moment, then looked at the Transparent Monster lying to the side.
"Shake your body and make some noise," he said.
The Transparent Monster began to sway, and the body in the other room swayed along with this section of its body, making a sound like flowing water.
There's some distance to the Sentinel Hill waterfall here, so you generally can't hear the sound of flowing water.
"Ah!" Hope heard a soft, aged cry from outside.
"Stop," Hope said.
He peered through the crack in the wooden plank again, and saw two shadows of different colors on the withered yellow grass outside, one white and one black, separated by a distance.
Hope guessed that the white one was Lavinia, and the other black one—
The voice sounded very old; it probably wasn't Dr. Morgan.
It seems Lavinia left voluntarily, otherwise there wouldn't be such a large gap between them.
--Perhaps the townspeople from the surrounding area------
Hope felt slightly relieved.
He climbed under the bed and found the pocket watch in the corner.
The damned Transparent Monster stayed close by and followed us in, but Hope ignored it.
9:22 AM – I wonder what business requires Lavinia to go out at this time.
Next to the pocket watch was the key to the Heart-shaped Padlock. Hope didn't have time to take the Heart-shaped Padlock back, so it remained hanging on the small door of the storage room.
Because of its debilitating side effect, Hope no longer carried it with her after leaving the storeroom, but stored it away separately.
He took the key in his hand and re-established his connection with the clutter.
The information that followed made Hope bite her nails.
There are people inside.
It's unclear when she went in, but if that's the case, Lavinia being called away doesn't seem so simple.
This feeling of someone being there lasted only a few seconds. After Lavinia left, the person hiding in the storage room quickly emerged.
Then, some faint sounds began to rise around the house, Hope listened carefully to discern them.
"Squeak----Squeak----"
It resembles some kind of old wooden component.
Hope leaned against the wall, listening to the changes in the distance of the sound.
He suddenly realized what was happening.
This is a wooden ladder, and someone is using it to climb to the roof.
"Get back!" Hope shouted at the restless, Transparent Monster.
With this guy around, Hope isn't worried about robbers or thieves outside.
But he was worried that Dr. Morgan was outside, and if Dr. Morgan was trying to rescue him by digging a hole in the roof—
Hope stared at the Transparent Monster.
If that's the case, then the doctor is being far too reckless.
