Background / History

Wilbur grew up in Whateley House as Lavinia Whateley’s son and Hope’s brother. He considered himself the son of a god and looked down on ordinary people, whom he reportedly called “ants”; however, his human upbringing and early mutations left him ashamed of his crocodile-like skin and determined to conceal his inhumanity beneath heavy clothing. 99 111 128

Before Old Whateley’s death, Wilbur helped control Hope’s confinement and introduced Dunwich residents as Hope’s “pets.” He used threats, spells, and the danger posed by the Transparent Monster to keep Hope from escaping. 6 7 43

Wilbur participated with Hope and Lavinia in a ritual to summon the King of Kings. During the aftermath, Hope killed him with bone spurs, but the King of Kings’ decree that the brothers could not die by each other’s hands caused Wilbur to return through the Transparent Monster, with several hours of memory missing. 58 59 61 73

After Old Whateley died, Wilbur became the family’s effective heir. He sought the Necronomicon at Miskatonic University and Bay State University, while pursuing access to occult knowledge connected to Yog-Sothoth. 77 93 95

During the conflict at Miskatonic University, he attempted to escape and later took librarians and professors hostage to reach Professor Armitage. He could be patient when he believed others were ignorant rather than deliberately hostile, such as when local children harassed Hope. In more dangerous situations, however, he was manipulative and ruthless: he treated Dunwich residents as expendable, threatened hostages, and considered killing witnesses to protect Whateley House’s secrets. 3 6 7 58 136

Wilbur removed Hope’s chain but remained confident that Hope could not escape. Miskatonic University Conflict and Death

Wilbur returned to Phillips Library for the Necronomicon and Oliver’s skull, fighting Hope, Jack Corbett, and the professors. After escaping with severe injuries, his Anomaly use transformed him into a tentacled monster. He took library staff hostage, but Hope poisoned and weakened him, then used Exchange in their final struggle.
