Power Progression
| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Established extraordinary attributes | 123 | Self-Being 1.68, Spirit Body 1.55, Self-Sense 1.10, Inspiration 0.53 while maintaining his darkness spell. |
| Inspiration depleted | 132 133 | Inspiration falls to 0, leaving him unable to cast spells. He requests a Green Powder Potion and continues operating with a pistol. |
| Third Ascension Ritual planned | 145 153 | Seeks a creature with strong Inspiration, then selects the fifth-rank Transparent Monster. The ritual would raise attributes through controlled acceptance of contamination; completion could qualify him for promotion from Level Two to Level One investigator. |
| Inspiration restored before the attempt | 156 | Inspiration is observed at 1.12, then decreases to 1.11 and 1.10 as he maintains concealment during the monster’s pursuit. No completed Ascension is established by this increase. |
| Third Ascension Ritual fails | 157 158 160 | The operation is disrupted. Jack expends all remaining Inspiration on an emergency escape spell; Hope subsequently identifies the Ascension Ritual as a failure. No promotion is confirmed. |
Background / History
Jack grew up on a farm, where he learned to handle cattle and drive an ox cart. These skills later become useful when he needs a quieter approach to Sentinel Hill 163.
On the mission preceding the Dunwich incident, Jack worked with two companions, one of whom was his younger sister. Both died after helping rescue residents from an area the Night Hawk Union’s leadership had planned to abandon. Jack alone survived. Because rescuing those residents was outside their assigned task, their heroism did not receive the rewards Hope expected; none of the rescued people attended their funerals 152.
Jack is on leave during the Dunwich operation. His care for the afflicted investigator Robert Aun and his involvement in the crisis are voluntary. Dr. Morgan describes him as a well-known, outstanding young Federation investigator, distinguishing his full-time service from the part-time work performed by many Miskatonic faculty members 152 157.
Appearance
- Hair: Short and golden-blond 147 158.
- Facial scar: Runs from the corner of his mouth across his cheek toward his ear or temple. It gives him a vicious appearance and can make his smile look either comical or chilling 147 161.
- Clothing: Carries his automatic pistol inside his coat 132.
Personality
Jack combines professional caution with a strong commitment to helping others. He refuses to confront Wilbur alone after losing his spellcasting capacity, verifies an arriving Discipline Committee Member’s credentials at gunpoint, and remains alert to possible occult surveillance. His distrust of Hope stems from Hope’s Whateley background, but he explicitly hopes Hope is innocent and considers the possibility that someone has marked or exploited him without his knowledge 133 134 159.
His manner is blunt, teasing, and sometimes macabre. He uses grotesque descriptions of investigator deaths when discussing survival, yet argues that nobility, kindness, justice, and mercy are the best protection against madness and the unknown. Professor Armitage describes his virtues as “excellent as commandments” and explains that his harshness reflects both exhaustion and experience of good deeds going unrewarded 133 152.
Jack continues functioning despite fear. During the Transparent Monster’s pursuit, his strained speech reveals that he is frightened, but he keeps assessing the creature’s behavior and controlling their distance from it 155 156.
Abilities & Skills
Darkness and Sensory Concealment
Jack’s principal demonstrated spell deepens darkness and suppresses sensory information 123 125 158.
- Covert preparation: Maintains the spell for half an hour before the library confrontation, concealing Hope’s position and their whispered planning from Wilbur 123.
- Combat concealment: Extinguishes the lamp and plunges the library floor into near-total darkness while fighting Wilbur 125.
- Pursuit protection: Reduces the sights, sounds, and stench of the Transparent Monster while Jack and Hope flee on Jenny II 156.
- Emergency escape: Uses a deeper application that removes Hope’s sight, hearing, and touch. The group emerges in an unfamiliar place away from the monsters 158.
- Limits: Consumes Inspiration. The fifth-rank monster repeatedly interferes with it, while the emergency escape exhausts Jack’s Inspiration completely 156 158.
Spell Interception and Combat Mobility
- Spell interception: Blocks Wilbur’s second spell during Hope’s shooting attempt 123.
- Rapid intervention: Crosses the darkened library floor and kicks Hope back toward the Second Circulation Desk, removing him from immediate danger. Hope cannot explain the speed through Jack’s Self-Being alone; the mechanism remains unidentified 125.
- Combat coordination: Fights Wilbur alongside Professor Armitage, whose perception allows him to assist despite the darkness 125.
Surgery and Emergency Care
Jack is a surgeon rather than a pharmacology specialist 145.
- Patient care: Works with Dr. Morgan to manage Robert Aun’s physically and mentally unstable condition 105.
- Suicide prevention: Removes the ammunition from Aun’s pistol before the patient attempts to shoot himself 105.
- Wound treatment: Treats Professor Rice’s gunshot injury after the failed ritual operation 159.
- Medical limits: Neither Jack nor Dr. Morgan can reverse Aun’s occult illness 105 151.
Investigation and Fieldcraft
- Threat assessment: Waits for backup when unable to cast spells instead of charging into Wilbur’s suspected location 133.
- Occult security: Considers clothing and carried objects as possible channels for surveillance; recommends replacing everything the group is wearing 159.
- Hostage analysis: Interprets the bloodless destruction at Paul’s house as a kidnapping and intimidation display, not evidence of murder 161.
- Ambush preparation: Pads his clothing with garments from the Farr house, changing his apparent bulk and helping him survive a gunshot near Sentinel Hill 163.
- Transport: Can ride horses, drive motor vehicles, manage cattle, and operate an ox cart 149 163.
- Operational planning: Splits the survivors into two teams, each carrying ritual supplies, so the enemy cannot easily capture everyone together 162.
Potion and Ritual Knowledge
- Basic potion handling: Can mix ingredients, but acknowledges that Professor Rice produces better results. He knows that five minutes is the minimum interval between Inspiration depletion and taking a Green Powder Potion 132.
- Prepared medical supplies: Collects medicines prescribed by Dr. Morgan to protect himself during an encounter with a high-Inspiration creature 145.
- Ritual limitations: Later confidently instructs Hope to place a sealed bottle beneath a tree. Hope notices his hesitation and challenges him for bluffing about how to prepare the Reverse Spirit-Infusion Ritual 164.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Automatic pistol — A new weapon carried inside his coat; remains useful when depleted Inspiration prevents spellcasting 132 133.
- Elder Sign — A wooden amulet received from Professor Armitage. Helps preserve his concealment spell against the Transparent Monster; he also throws an Elder Sign during the emergency escape 152 156 158.
- Jenny II — Horse that carries Jack and Hope during the monster-luring operation 154 155 156.
- Telescope — Used to inspect the Transparent Monster and make Hope study it before approaching 155.
- Medical and ritual supplies — Includes medicines collected for his Ascension attempt and bitter tree rhizome later provided to Hope as “equipment support” 145.
- Necronomicon — Temporarily holds the book at Phillips Library and refuses to surrender it to Wilbur 122 123.
Relationships
- Hope / Hope Love — Field partner, prospective recruit, and person under professional suspicion. Jack praises his virtues, protects him in combat, keeps his possible remaining lifespan private, and offers a letter of guarantee and introductions to help him avoid permanent Federation surveillance 125 133 154 156 159.
- Dr. Francis Morgan — Medical and investigative partner. Morgan prescribes Jack’s preparations, treats the discomfort of Inspiration depletion, and helps plan the hostage-rescue operation 145 159 161 162.
- Professor Henry Armitage — Trusted senior ally. Supports Jack’s Ascension attempt, fights beside him, and explains his past losses and moral character to Hope 125 152 153.
- Professor Warren Rice — Provides potion-making expertise and support for Jack’s ritual preparations; Jack later treats his gunshot wound 132 154 159.
- Robert Aun — Federation investigator under Jack and Morgan’s care. Jack’s removal of his pistol ammunition prevents a suicide attempt 105.
- Younger sister — Former mission companion who died while rescuing residents; Jack was the mission’s sole surviving member 152.
- Wilbur Whateley — Adversary during the library confrontation. Jack withholds the Necronomicon, coordinates with Hope, and counters Wilbur’s spells 123 125.
- Paul Corey — Civilian participant whom Jack includes in the continued operation. Jack asks him to trace the kidnappers’ telephone call 162.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Robert Aun’s Treatment
- Introduced as one of the doctors caring for Aun, whose transformation and despair require heavy sedation and precautions against self-harm 105.
- Continues this work voluntarily while on leave from the Federation 152.
Confrontation at Phillips Library
- Calls the group while holding the Necronomicon, reporting that Wilbur has Oliver’s skull and has reached the Skull Museum 122.
- Conceals Hope in darkness and helps execute a plan to shoot Wilbur in the thigh 123.
- Escalates to direct combat alongside Armitage, then continues the search with university security despite depleted Inspiration 125 132 134 137.
Third Ascension Attempt
- Selects the Transparent Monster as the target for his third Ascension Ritual, with Armitage’s agreement and Morgan and Rice’s assistance 153 154.
- Uses Hope as bait, explaining that the aim is to return the creature to its father’s world rather than kill it 155.
- Maintains concealment during the chase and delivers the monster to Armitage’s prepared intervention 156.
- Saves the group after the operation collapses, sacrificing all remaining Inspiration. The Ascension attempt fails 158 160.
Kidnappings and Sentinel Hill
- Takes command of casualty transport and investigates how the attackers located the ritual 159.
- Helps identify Elizabeth, Nancy, and Mr. Sawyer’s disappearance as a kidnapping and plans a two-team response 161 162.
- Rejects the caller’s demand to exchange Hope for the hostages, arguing that they should deny the enemy what he most wants 162.
- Searches the Farr house, survives an ambush, and approaches Sentinel Hill with Hope 163.
- Is challenged by Hope over his claimed ritual knowledge. In the following encounter, Jack does not appear to help when Little Robert Miller and Number Two capture Hope; the supplied account does not establish the reason for his absence 164 165.
