Background / History
Heir of House Varezys
Lonzell is the son of a former Triarch of Volantis and Princess Senira. His mother’s numerous bastard children and political entanglements became a threat to his inheritance; among them was his maternal half-brother Alexiu Bantaro, who was killed by Lonzell’s retainer Amor. Lonzell used a drop of his silver-glimmering blood to sever what he believed was the last of Senira’s cursed entanglements. 2
After returning to his family estate, Lonzell sold the northern Varezes holdings, directed his retainers to settle the family’s remaining affairs, and prepared to leave Volantis. He also entered the vast laboratory beneath the estate and opened a book left by Princess Senira. 2
Prophecy and the Valyrian expedition
Lonzell sought the guidance of the red priests Benerro and Malah. During their fire-and-blood ritual, Malah willingly burned himself to obtain a prophecy concerning Lonzell’s path; Lonzell then gave his blood to aid Malah’s resurrection. The prophecy directed him westward to await “the final movement of the song of ice and fire.” 5
He organized a fleet of thirty-two ships, including the Weeping Boy and Silent Lord, and sailed from Volantis with Valarr, Rey, his retainers, and allied nobles. 12 At the ruins of Valyria, he led an exploration party through the Smoking Sea and recovered Valyrian relics, including weapons and armor later distributed among his followers. 14 16 27
Establishing a Westerosi power base
Lonzell secured recognition, hostages, and a foothold in the Dornish Marches, intending to establish House Varezys in Westeros before expanding further into Dorne. 29 His growing authority was reflected in titles including Lord of Dragonstone, Key to the Bone Road, Governor of the Marches, Guardian of the Stone Road, Noble of Silverblood, Slayer of the Viper, and Destroyer of Toran. 47
He redistributed conquered and newly claimed lands, reserving key territories to sustain the Silverblood Army while enfeoffing local nobles and vassals elsewhere. 48
Marriage and dynasty
Lonzell toured Westeros to assess potential marriage alliances personally rather than commit based solely on political recommendations. 52 At Horn Hill, he became betrothed to Diana Tarly, choosing her over her elder sister Sansa while arranging for Valarr to marry into another house. 56
Lonzell and Diana later had twins, Lingor and Samantha. He used blood sorcery to relieve Diana’s pain and assist in the difficult delivery. 75
Appearance
In his youth, Lonzell was a tall, slender Valyrian boy of approximately fifteen or sixteen. He was considered exceptionally striking even among Valyrian nobility. 2
- Fine, short silver hair that curls slightly. 2
- Deep purple eyes. 2
- Usually wore purple silk garments in Volantis. 2
- Wore a prominent silver dragon armlet that marked his status. 2
- In later years, his boyishness faded and his features became noticeably harder. 87
Personality
Lonzell is calculating, patient, and highly conscious of power. He approaches inheritance, warfare, marriage, and diplomacy as interconnected political problems, preferring durable advantages over impulsive action. He deliberately allowed the Yronwoods’ confidence to grow rather than immediately commit to a second front, judging that an arrogant enemy would eventually overextend itself. 54
He can be ruthless toward threats to his family’s position, but is also protective of his siblings, retainers, wife, and children. He personally aided Diana during childbirth and treated the birth of their dragonriding children as an important continuation of the family line. 75 77
When thinking through difficult decisions, Lonzell habitually rubs nearby objects, such as a sword hilt, bedsheet, armrest, or saddle guard. 57 97
Abilities & Skills
