Overview

Nen is the life energy naturally emitted by the human body. Ordinary people generally cannot sense it and allow it to leak away, while Nen users learn to sense, release, and retain it. 1

Its ability system can turn imagination into reality and supports highly varied, sometimes bizarre, abilities. A user's skill, aura capacity, affinity, experience, and restrictions all affect what they can achieve. 2 5 33

Learning Nen

A person crosses Nen's threshold by gaining control over their own Qi. This normally begins with sensing Qi, releasing it, and retaining it. 1

• Anyone can theoretically learn Nen, but only a small number of people ever encounter it. 3
• An untrained person's aura leaks from the top of the head; trained users may also deliberately leak aura to pass as ordinary people. 3
• Nen can be awakened even under the suppression of God Script, though doing so is considered abnormal and dangerous. 4
• Directly developing an ability before fully learning the basic techniques is possible, but produces an unstable prototype and carries practical limitations. 3 5

Four Major Principles

Nen Affinities

Nen users possess one of six inherent affinities. Training in one's natural category is more efficient, while abilities outside that category are harder to master. 16

Advanced Techniques

Beyond the Four Major Principles, Nen users can develop advanced applications for combat, concealment, perception, and aura management. 9

• Gyo — Concentrates aura around the eyes or on weapons and external objects, improving perception or increasing an object's strength and attack power. It can reveal Nen concealed by In. 9 11
• In — Conceals the presence of Nen for ambushes and surprise attacks. 9 11
• Ko — Focuses aura into one point for heightened offense or defense. 9
• En — Expands aura outward to perceive all things within its range. 9
• Ken — Covers the entire body with maximum Manifestation Aura for powerful offense and defense; it can withstand conventional gunfire, though impacts still cause pain. 9 38
• Ryu — Rapidly reallocates aura flow for fast offensive and defensive exchanges. 9

Aura and Nen Capacity

Manifestation Aura

Manifestation Aura is the amount of aura a user can actively release. It is one factor in judging combat strength, though it does not alone determine a Nen user's overall capability. 7 30

A stronger aura can provide superior offense and defense, but strategy, information gaps, physical fitness, and combat experience can allow a weaker user to defeat a stronger one. 9 15

Nen Capacity

Nen Capacity is the finite capacity available for developing abilities. Each ability occupies part of this capacity, making users cautious about adding effects or creating multiple abilities. Exceptionally talented users can possess enough capacity to develop more than one ability without undue burden. 5 33

Vows and Restrictions

A Vow and Restriction establishes rules for an ability. Under the principle of equivalent exchange, accepting restrictions can exponentially strengthen an ability's effects. 21 33

• Restrictions can become exploitable weaknesses when opponents identify them. 32 42
• Skilled users may deliberately turn a restriction into an advantage, such as using shared pain to build pain tolerance without direct injury. 21
• Stronger effects generally demand greater costs, risks, or limitations. 31 33

Post-Mortem Nen

Normally, a Nen user's aura dissipates upon death. If driven by powerful unresolved emotion, however, it may persist and become stronger through death. 33

This lingering aura can form a Post-Mortem Entity, also called a Nen Artifact: a surviving and strengthened conjured object or entity with its own special ability. Such artifacts are rare, difficult to control, and may pose catastrophic danger. 20 33

• Post-Mortem Nen is far more difficult to remove than ordinary Nen. 31
• Fewer than ten Nen Exorcists are stated to be capable of removing Post-Mortem Nen. 31
• A Nen Space strengthened by Post-Mortem Nen may require a Nen Exorcist to open. 43

Nen Exorcism

Nen Exorcism removes Nen effects or lingering resentment from a target. Nen Exorcists are exceptionally scarce because the work is dangerous, painful, and often requires the exorcist to bear or digest the removed Nen themselves. 2 26

A cost-free exorcism can instantly dispel Nen placed on an ally and may decisively reverse a battle. Completing an exorcism can also refine an Emotion Fragment from the removed resentment. 2

Emotion Fragments

Emotion Fragments are refined from exorcised resentment and can be used as versatile resources. They may be employed to strengthen attacks. 2 37

God Script

God Script uses symbolic characters as vessels to seal, enhance, restrict, or temporarily store Nen and Nen abilities. It is complex, difficult to learn, and has limited practical combat value, leaving few users proficient in it. 33
