Background / History
Netero was a veteran explorer who reached the Dark Continent twice in his youth. During one expedition, he traveled with Linne Market and Zigg Zoldyck; when the Gatekeeper Magical Beast Speedy Men nearly killed Zigg, Netero saved him with the 100-Type Guanyin and defeated the creature with a single palm strike. 401 634 635
He became the Hunter Association’s chairman and the highest-ranking official of the Hunter Exam Examination Committee. Despite his deliberately idle public behavior, he retained responsibility for major Nen-related crises and personally directed Association operations. 100 370
Netero placed a Restriction on his son, Beyond Netero, preventing Beyond from returning to the Dark Continent while Netero lived. The Restriction became the central condition of Beyond’s eventual challenge to the death. 547 562 563
Appearance
Netero was an elderly, broad-built man with a long beard and an outwardly relaxed bearing. In his final battle against Meruem, he wore a Heart Character Battle Suit and had shaved both his head and beard. 100 531
- Often stroked his beard while speaking or assessing others.
- Could appear deceptively frail or unserious despite possessing extraordinary aura control.
- Used a prayer gesture to activate the 100-Type Guanyin. 184 584
Personality
Netero mixed mischief with careful judgment. He delegated paperwork to Beans while amusing himself with physical tricks, teased younger Hunters into sparring, and frequently concealed serious intentions behind laughter or casual wording. 100 147 388
He judged people primarily by character rather than background, formal status, or dangerous abilities. After learning Moyu’s secrets through Cheadle and Biscuit, Netero chose to trust Moyu because he recognized the boy’s trust in Cheadle and his moral disposition. 147
A lifelong martial artist, Netero craved a genuine life-or-death battle rather than an imitation shaped by Nen Space. He nevertheless understood that duty could require abandoning martial honor, as shown by his willingness to prepare a Poor Man’s Rose against Meruem. 161 522
Abilities & Skills
100-Type Guanyin
Netero’s signature Nen ability manifests a colossal golden Guanyin capable of attacking at extreme speed from numerous angles. Its speed, reach, and shifting attack patterns make approaching Netero exceptionally difficult. 161 398
- First Palm — A lightning-fast vertical strike; its impact can crater reinforced ground. 184
- Second Hand — A powerful follow-up palm strike used against Neferpitou. 501
- Third Hand — Closes the Guanyin’s palms around a target, used to trap Meruem and Beyond. 519 584
- Ninety-Ninth Hand — A sustained all-angle barrage from the Guanyin’s many arms. 426 584
- Zero Hand — Netero’s ultimate attack, fired from the Guanyin’s mouth as a massive Nen blast. It severely injured Beyond but did not defeat him. 585
- The Guanyin can be re-manifested after being destroyed as long as Netero’s “heart” remains. 585
- Its primary weakness is an opponent able to force its attacks into a predictable point of contact. Beyond’s Unity of Knowledge and Action: Domain directly countered its multi-angle offense. 584 585
Aura Control and Martial Mastery
Netero possessed refined mastery over high-level Nen applications and combat timing.
- Used near-perfect Ryu to reinforce vulnerable points at the instant of impact, preventing Moyu’s prepared strike from piercing even his clothing. 398 399
- Combined Gyo and In to identify and secretly sabotage Moyu’s teleportation cards during their match. 400
- Could maintain clear thought in extremely compressed combat intervals, a level associated with Heart Drop Fist Hearing. 184
- Identified the illusory, thought-driven nature of the Eye of Vision’s Nen Space through experience and observation. 161
Post-Mortem Nen and Calamity Expertise
Netero understood the danger posed by extreme Nen vows, lingering Nen after death, and Dark Continent threats.
- Correctly judged that Davidson’s obsession made powerful Post-Mortem Nen highly likely. 107
- Treated dangerous Post-Mortem Nen as a long-standing global problem rather than an isolated phenomenon. 271
- Considered the Dark Continent taboo because expeditions could bring Calamities capable of devastating human society back to the known world. 401
Equipment / Items
- Poor Man’s Rose — Implanted in Netero as a contingency against Meruem; it was not activated and was later surgically removed. 522 546
- Shapeshifter Mask imprint — Netero voluntarily entered Zetsu for eight seconds so Moyu could create a mask copying his appearance and 100-Type Guanyin. 401
Relationships
- Moyu Isaac — Trusted junior, sparring partner, and eventual successor. Netero accepted Moyu despite his hidden history, fought him repeatedly to assess his growth, and permitted him to imprint the Shapeshifter Mask. 147 184 401
- Beyond Netero — Son and longtime rival. Netero’s Restriction prevented Beyond’s return to the Dark Continent; their eventual duel ended with Netero’s death. 547 563 585
- Cheadle Yorkshire — Trusted Zodiac, physician, and confidante. Netero relied on her judgment regarding Moyu and later depended on her during his recovery. 147 546
- Beans — Long-serving administrative aide. Beans handled Association business, relayed Netero’s orders, and frequently endured the chairman’s irresponsibility. 100 583
- Linne Market — Fellow Dark Continent explorer and close friend. Linne recognized Netero’s influence in Moyu’s ten-thousand-sword training. 246 634
- Zigg Zoldyck — Expedition companion who admired Netero and wished to surpass him. Netero saved Zigg from Speedy Men. 635
- Meruem — Chimera Ant King whom Netero could suppress but not seriously injure with the Guanyin alone. 518 531
- Jed — Former acquaintance and opponent whose post-mortem recreation Netero defeated inside the Nen Space. 148 161
