He is self-centered and theatrical in battle. Rather than taking the most efficient route to victory, he may accept injuries or prolong an exchange simply because it is more enjoyable 114 116. Pain does not deter him—when Moyu’s distorted Hisoka copy was beaten, the real Hisoka felt the reflected pain and reacted with visible pleasure 64.

Moyu becomes a singular fixation for him. Hisoka eventually concludes that what matters is not fighting in general, but finding an opponent capable of fascinating and driving him to obsession; in his experience, only Moyu fulfills that role 564.

History

Hisoka first becomes connected to Moyu indirectly when Moyu creates a distorted Shadow Copy in his likeness, nicknamed “Picasso Hisoka.” Because of Soul Echo’s pain-sharing restriction, Hisoka feels the damage inflicted on the copy despite being elsewhere 64.

He later encounters four escaped Fox River prisoners fleeing from Moyu. After casually rating their strength, he kills all four with playing cards, then becomes intensely interested when Moyu arrives. The two immediately begin a life-or-death fight despite having no prior grudge 113. Hisoka adapts quickly to the Shadow Copy’s body-altering movements and secretly attaches Bungee Gum to its chin, but Moyu ultimately reveals that the fighter was a decoy and knocks Hisoka unconscious from behind 115 116. Illumi later finds him severely beaten, with “Thank you” written nearby in blood; Hisoka responds to the loss with excitement and regret that he never learned Moyu’s name 118.

Moyu subsequently exploits Hisoka’s appearance through a Shadow Copy called Hisoka Benso, creating a battered underdog persona at Heavens Arena. The false fighter’s repeated recoveries popularize the nicknames “Roly-Poly Hisoka” and “The Tumbler.” The real Hisoka investigates the identity theft, then takes over the contestant identity before it expires 188 219 220 287.

As a Floor Master, Hisoka continues waiting for Moyu’s return. Their official Heavens Arena rematch ends with Hisoka being outmaneuvered by Moyu’s concealed Conjuration ability, the Black Blade, and knocked unconscious before the referee’s count ends 291 292 293.

Major Arcs

Hunter Exam

Hisoka toys with Gon, Killua, Kurapika, and Leorio rather than killing them, treating them as “unripe apples” with potential worth observing. Moyu intervenes and defeats him again, though Hisoka uses the encounter to identify Moyu and set another hidden Bungee Gum trap 376 377.

During the third phase, Hisoka selects Kurapika as a teammate largely to provoke him, chooses the highest-difficulty red locator, then destroys it and abandons the team entirely 390 391.

Phantom Troupe Conflict

Hisoka refuses to join Chrollo’s plan to kill Moyu, choosing instead to watch the battle. When the situation develops, he suddenly kills Kortopi and becomes an enemy of the Phantom Troupe 415 416.

He later fights alongside Kurapika against Code Four, an elite Kakin secret-unit protector. Though badly injured by explosive throwing knives, Hisoka protects Kurapika, sets Bungee Gum traps, and coordinates his attacks around Kurapika’s chain abilities 593 594.

Dark Continent Expedition

Hisoka and Moyu conduct their first genuine coordinated battle against a nearly invisible, dwarf-like territorial creature. A Shadow Clone serves as bait, Hisoka’s concealed Bungee Gum exposes and restrains the creature, and Moyu uses Shadow Shift to disable it 467.

Proper Duel with Moyu

After Moyu removes the parasitic plants covering Hisoka’s body, Hisoka immediately requests the long-awaited proper duel. Despite setting multiple Bungee Gum traps, he is completely outclassed by Moyu’s speed, aura, and Gyo: Phase Force 564 566.

Moyu destroys both of Hisoka’s arms and knocks him unconscious, but chooses to heal and spare him instead of killing him. The defeat briefly breaks Hisoka’s obsession, until Moyu’s claim that he may be the strongest person in the world gives Hisoka a renewed reason to train and pursue greater strength 566.
