Wade was a former Planetary Defense Force officer who rose from the bottom of the Hive City. Before the rebellion, he spent more than a decade fighting through the Lower Hive to attain field-grade rank; he also has several children at home. His experience gives him an unusually practical understanding of the Lower Hive's gangs, population, military shortages, and territorial politics. 5 66

After Fu Haoran becomes governor, Wade serves as a trusted subordinate and military commander. He leads the arrival of the 7th Engineering Regiment's 1st Battalion—3,320 personnel with armored vehicles, engineering equipment, and a Leman Russ Battle Tank—and carries out Fu Haoran's orders to secure food and resources. 11

Personality

Wade is disciplined, blunt, and deeply conditioned by the Hive City's brutal military culture. He initially treats casualties as an unavoidable cost of victory and shows contempt for enemies who surrender quickly. 12 13

Despite this ruthlessness, he is protective of his soldiers and civilians under his command. He worries about finances when Fu Haoran commits to feeding Hive City children, shields the wounded Ron during the defense of the Banquet Hall, and urges Fu Haoran to save the people trapped in the Honeycomb Building. 14 76 77

He is fiercely loyal to Fu Haoran. Given the opportunity to withdraw from a seemingly hopeless conflict, Wade instead closes the exit and commits to fighting alongside his comrades, even if it means dying against the nobles' forces. 66
