Background
Ayanokoji was trained from childhood in the White Room, an extreme educational institution designed to produce artificial geniuses. Regarded as its greatest masterpiece, he had already developed enough stamina and combat ability by age nine to defeat every practical-combat instructor there. 166 242
He entered Advanced Nurturing High School to escape his father Ayanokoji Atsuomi’s control and experience the ordinary life denied to him: school, friendship, love, failure, equality, and personal freedom. To avoid attention, he made his entrance-exam score appear as exactly fifty points in every subject. 17 20 166
Shiraishi Makoto confronted him early in their enrollment, revealing knowledge of the White Room and negotiating an agreement: Shiraishi would help prevent Ayanokoji’s expulsion, while Ayanokoji would refrain from actively leading Class D toward Class A. Ayanokoji accepted, prioritizing a peaceful school life over public advancement. 20
Ayanokoji’s situation became more precarious after his father began interfering with the school and the possibility of White Room students enrolling was raised. Chairman Sakayanagi Kōhei promised protection within school rules, while Ayanokoji accepted that future threats were unavoidable. 156
Personality
Ayanokoji outwardly presents himself as an ordinary, introverted student with few friends and little ambition. He is calm, emotionally restrained, and reluctant to attract notice, using an inconspicuous persona to conceal abilities that would disrupt his desired lifestyle. 20 154 229
Beneath that facade, he is observant, pragmatic, and willing to manipulate information when necessary. His relationships are initially transactional: he cooperates with Shiraishi because their interests do not conflict, and he intervenes in Class D only when circumstances or agreements require it. 53 106
His central personal goal is freedom. Rather than simply defeating his father or proving the White Room wrong through force, he seeks to form an identity that belongs to himself instead of functioning as a product of White Room training. 166
Abilities & Skills
White Room Conditioning
Ayanokoji possesses exceptional physical and intellectual conditioning as the White Room’s greatest masterpiece.
- Trained in combat and endurance from childhood; by age nine, he could defeat every practical-combat instructor in the White Room. 166
- Is regarded by White Room students as an overwhelming benchmark; Yagami Takuya’s resentment stems from being constantly compared unfavorably to him. 252
- Understands the behavior and likely methods of White Room operatives, though he remains cautious when evidence is incomplete. 247
Concealment and Performance Control
Ayanokoji deliberately suppresses his capabilities to preserve an ordinary school life.
- Scored exactly fifty points in every entrance-exam subject, creating an unusually average-looking academic record. 17
- Held back during athletic events despite being capable of outperforming the displayed results. 116
- Deliberately scored 320 points in the cross-grade exam, receiving a C+ Academic Ability Rating while keeping his true ability and identity concealed. 262
- Declined transfer to Class A because its greater visibility and responsibilities would interfere with his preferred lifestyle. 229
Strategy and Information Control
Ayanokoji acts indirectly, often arranging outcomes while leaving others unaware of his involvement.
- Found Ibuki Mio’s hidden camera, uncovered her buried walkie-talkie, and destroyed both tools to cut off her espionage. 60 64
- Used Horikita Suzune’s leader card as deliberate misinformation, ensuring Ibuki would identify Horikita as Class D’s leader. 64
- Planted and retrieved a voice recorder to obtain proof of Ryuen Kakeru’s involvement in the Sudo incident. 53
- Used the recording to expose Chabashira Sae’s attempt to pressure him into becoming Class D’s indispensable leader. 91
Hand-to-Hand Combat
Ayanokoji’s combat ability is his most dangerous openly demonstrated skill.
- Defeated Ryuen Kakeru, Ishizaki Daichi, Albert, and Ibuki Mio alone on the rooftop without causing serious lasting harm. 159 160
- Targets precise angles and vulnerable points rather than relying on visibly forceful strikes. 160
- Blocked and evaded Hosen Kazuomi’s attacks while protecting Horikita Suzune during Hosen’s attempted assault. 260
- Avoids displaying this ability unless forced, as exposure undermines his preferred anonymity. 160 262
Martial-Arts Instruction
Ayanokoji can assess combat potential and train others in practical self-defense.
- Assessed Shiraishi Makoto as talented enough that he could have become one of the White Room’s best students. 191
- Taught Shiraishi technical fundamentals before escalating their sparring to a level he considered appropriate against White Room students. 229
- Trains with controlled intensity, though even a single hour of sparring can leave Shiraishi unable to continue. 229
Equipment / Items
- Voice recorder — Given to him by Shiraishi Makoto to monitor Chabashira Sae; later used as evidence against her coercive deal. 20 91
- Cooking utensils — Purchased for Amasawa Ichika’s proposed cooking test, though he did not intend to partner with her himself. 255
Relationships
- Shiraishi Makoto — Cautious ally and fellow strategist. Their initial arrangement limits Ayanokoji’s class ambitions, but they later exchange intelligence, coordinate against White Room threats, and train together. 20 229 247
- Horikita Suzune — Classmate whom he covertly supports. He protected her during the Uninhabited Island Exam, helped mislead Ibuki through her leader card, and shielded her from Hosen’s attack. 64 260
- Sato Maya — Began pursuing a relationship with him after noticing his athletic performance. They first exchanged contact information as friends; Ayanokoji later identifies staying in her class as one reason not to transfer. 144 229
- Chabashira Sae — Homeroom teacher who attempted to pressure him into leading Class D; Ayanokoji countered by presenting a recording of her threats. 90 91
- Ryuen Kakeru — Rival who identified him as Class D’s hidden strategist and lured him to the rooftop. Ayanokoji defeated Ryuen and his allies, leaving Ryuen’s resolve badly shaken. 154 159 160
- Sakayanagi Kōhei — School chairman who recognizes the threat posed by Ayanokoji Atsuomi and promises to protect Ayanokoji within institutional rules. 156 157
- Ayanokoji Atsuomi — His biological father and the source of the control Ayanokoji seeks to escape. Atsuomi interferes with school affairs and may use teachers or White Room students against him. 156 166
- Nanase Tsubasa / Matsuo Eiichiro — A hostile first-year who believes Ayanokoji is indirectly responsible for the destruction of Matsuo’s family and seeks to force him out of the school. 262 263
- Amasawa Ichika — A suspected White Room student whose intentions remain unclear. Ayanokoji refuses to partner with her while investigating her identity and interest in him. 255 256
Story Role / Major Arcs
Class D’s Hidden Strategist
Ayanokoji initially remains in the background while Class D struggles internally. He begins making covert interventions after Chabashira pressures him to become indispensable, gathering evidence against Ryuen and quietly steering events without claiming credit. 90 91
Uninhabited Island Exam
During the Uninhabited Island Exam, he identifies Ibuki as an infiltrator, destroys her communication devices, and stages an apparent exposure of Horikita’s leader card to feed false intelligence to Class C. 60 64
Rooftop Confrontation
After Ryuen identifies him as “X,” Ayanokoji accepts a rooftop summons and defeats Ryuen’s four-person group alone. He deliberately limits the damage he inflicts, but the encounter reveals enough of his combat ability to break Ryuen’s fighting spirit. 159 160
White Room Pursuit
Ayanokoji becomes the target of escalating interference from his father’s side, including the arrival of White Room students and a twenty-million-Private-Point bounty intended to force his expulsion. He and Shiraishi investigate Nanase, Yagami, Amasawa, and other possible operatives. 156 247 248
Cross-Grade Joint Special Exam
With the partner-selection deadline approaching, Ayanokoji remains wary of being paired with a White Room operative. He ultimately partners with Hosen Kazuomi, helps expose Hosen’s attempted assault, and deliberately earns only a modest result to maintain his cover. 256 260 262
