Caged Bird
Naruto: Starting from Capturing the Main House to Become the Puppet MasterBiodata
| Feature | Value |
|---|---|
| Name | Caged Bird (笼中鸟) |
| Alias(es) | Caged Bird Technique; Caged Bird seal |
| Role | Hyuga clan curse seal that protects the Byakugan while giving its activation holders control over Branch Family members 1 2 |
| First Appearance | Chapter 1 1 |
Effects and Limitations
- Control: A Main Family member can activate the seal against a Branch Family member within their line of sight. Activation turns the recipient’s own chakra against their nerves and Byakugan 2 9.
- Protection after death: When a marked Branch Family member dies, the seal destroys their Byakugan and neural tissue, obstructing theft of the eyes and extraction of information 6 7.
- Removal risk: The seal is linked to both ocular and brain nerves. Tsunade says that attempting to break it directly with medical ninjutsu would kill the recipient unless those neural links and the relevant chakra flow could be stopped simultaneously 34.
- Security weakness: Main Family members know how to activate the technique. Hane argues that if an enemy obtained that method, Branch Family ninjas could become vulnerable to someone outside the clan 2.
History
The Caged Bird was developed partly to prevent the Otsutsuki on the moon from stealing Hyuga eyes. Within the clan, it also became the means by which the Main Family controlled the Branch Family 2 9.
Hyuga Hane exploited the danger of its activation method being exposed. He secretly captured Main Family member Hyuga Hisanobu, staged his apparent capture by the Mist, and used deaths attributed to the seal to pressure Konoha and the Main Family into addressing it. Hyuga ninjas were withdrawn from the Mist battlefield as rumors spread 1 2 3.
Hiruzen later presented an improved Caged Bird seal to the Branch Family, saying it could protect the Byakugan without being used to torture its recipient. Some Branch Family members accepted the change, while others objected that their lives could still be controlled 12. During the subsequent rebellion, the Main Family discovered that several rebels had sealed off their marks and that Hyuga Miyuki’s seal could not be activated against her 41.
Known Ways Around the Seal
| Method | Effect and limitation |
|---|---|
| Evolved Byakugan | Hane’s ocular power suppresses an activation attempt, but doing so consumes power he might need in combat; it does not remove his seal 9. |
| Sealing the activation link | Prevents external commands from reaching the mark. Its visible markings and abnormal chakra flow make it easy for a Byakugan user to detect 33. |
| Fission Technique | Produces a split body without the seal while the original retains it. Strength and chakra are initially halved, and Tsunade cannot guarantee the technique’s success 33 37. |
| Izanagi | Hane identifies it as a temporary answer, limited by the Sharingan used to hold the transcribed technique 33. |
| Surviving or being revived after death | Hane reasons that the seal vanishes after death, making certain reincarnation or revival techniques possible solutions. His proposed methods are not suitable for the entire Branch Family 33. |
Hyuga Hiashi also gives the departing rebels a refined protective mark. It retains the Byakugan-protection functions of the Caged Bird but cannot be activated by someone else to control the recipient’s life or death 41.
