Background

As a child, Kaido was his country’s strongest warrior and a war hero, but his king sold him to the Marines as a subordinate. This betrayal began his hatred of the World Government and the Celestial Dragons. At fifteen, he joined the Rocks Pirates; after the God Valley defeat six years later, he became a wandering pirate again. 266

Kaido was repeatedly captured, tortured, and sentenced to death, surviving all of it. During one capture, Dr. Vegapunk experimented on him and extracted his Lineage Factor. He escaped the facility with Abel—later known as King the Conflagration—and founded the Beasts Pirates. 266 351

At age thirty-one, Kaido was persuaded by Kurozumi Higurashi to pursue Wano Country for its Seastone resources. Twenty years before the present events, he defeated Kozuki Oden, seized Wano, expanded its military industry, and rose as one of the Four Emperors. 266

Kaido sought Roger’s treasure and Laugh Tale because he believed it contained a means to overthrow the World Government and create a world free from oppression. His belief was rooted in his own history, despite the oppressive rule he imposed over Wano. 266 352
