Background

Nami initially concealed that she was a member of Arlong’s Fishman pirate crew and operated under the nickname “Cat Burglar.” When Mo Ye recognized her aboard a cruise ship, she tried to silence him with a kick and falsely accused him of molesting her before escaping during the pirate attack. She then infiltrated Alvida’s ship, incapacitated a pirate with Charm and a kick, and began looting it 1 2.

Her association with Arlong was born from coercion. After Arlong killed her adoptive mother, Bell-mère, for failing to pay protection money, Nami was forced to draw navigation charts for the Arlong Pirates. She stole treasure to accumulate the 100 million Beli needed to buy Cocoyasi Village’s freedom 27.

When both Luffy and Mo Ye asked her to become their navigator, Nami rejected Luffy because she did not want to join the kind of pirate crew she despised. Mo Ye’s knowledge of Arlong and promise to defeat him, together with his claim that his group pursued exploration and treasure hunting, led her to choose the Moya Adventure Group 12.

Nami returned to Cocoyasi Village with the group to confront Arlong. Though terrified when Arlong targeted her, she faced the trauma tied to Bell-mère’s death and helped reclaim Arlong Park’s extorted wealth. After Arlong’s defeat, she witnessed him and his men kneel before Bell-mère’s grave to apologize 27 28 29.

Appearance

Nami is an orange-haired young woman described as fair-skinned and beautiful. After her former Arlong tattoo was removed, she adopted a new personal mark representing her loyalty to the Moya Adventure Group.

  • Orange hair 28 148
  • Former Arlong tattoo removed through Mo Ye’s healing and beauty-treatment ability 70
  • Bears the character “Night” on her shoulder 70
  • Later carries twins 228 296

Personality

Nami is calculating, opportunistic, and intensely attached to treasure. She readily joins an adventure group after hearing of the Golden City’s gold, demands that not even a single Beli be abandoned during the Rain Dinners haul, and eagerly seizes recovered treasure before Moya’s party can fully return to the Yanhuang 12 96 107.

Despite her self-interest, she is deeply loyal to her home, sister, and companions. Arlong’s oppression left her fearful and burdened with guilt, but she returns to Cocoyasi to free its people. When Crocodile claims Moya is dead, she panics; Robin’s reassurance that Mo Ye’s ability is still affecting her skin restores her hope 27 96.

She also has a mischievous, confrontational streak. She reacts fiercely to rivals for Moya’s attention, teases others, and uses deception in battle, such as bluffing Perona into exposing the location of her real body 34 57 152 168.

Abilities & Skills

Nami’s navigation is indispensable to the group’s survival in the Grand Line and later voyages.

  • Binoculars — Used for scouting weather, ships, and targets from the air or at sea 33 144

Relationships

  • Moya / Mo Ye — Her captain and partner. She joins his group after he promises to free Cocoyasi from Arlong; later she eats the Float-Float Fruit to support him and becomes pregnant with twins 12 27 138 228.
  • Nojiko — Her adoptive sister. Both mourn Bell-mère and share a teasing, close relationship after Cocoyasi’s liberation 28 29.
  • Bell-mère — Her adoptive mother, murdered by Arlong while protecting Nami and Nojiko. Nami later meets a memory-derived leaf person of Bell-mère on the Island of Life and Death 27 148.
  • Luffy — A competing captain who wanted her as his navigator. Nami rejects his invitation and joins Mo Ye’s group instead 12.
  • Nico Robin — Fellow crewmate and confidante. Robin reassures Nami that Moya is alive during Crocodile’s attack and later supports her during pregnancy 96 296.
  • Vivi — Fellow member of Moya’s inner circle. Nami spends time with Vivi in Skypiea, though both show hostility toward women seeking Moya’s attention 201.
