Background / History

After Whitebeard's death, Miss Bakkin told Weevil that Whitebeard was his father and that they should claim his inheritance. Weevil accepted her account, and the two set sail for the New World. Their campaign against Whitebeard's former territories brought them into conflict with his surviving crew 196 204 205.

When the Whitebeard Pirates sank their ship, Bakkin tried to save herself by blaming Weevil for their killings and denying that she was his mother. A distraught Weevil was then approached by Moya, who claimed to be his big brother. Moya manipulated Bakkin into appearing to confirm the claim, prevented Weevil from saving her, and blamed her death on Marco. Weevil joined Moya after accepting his promise of family and food 205 206.

Moya subsequently sent Weevil against the Whitebeard Pirates. He fought their division commanders aboard the Moby Dick and served as the spearhead of Moya's assault 207 208 209. Later, former Admiral Zephyr recognized Weevil as the attacker who had killed the recruits aboard a Marine training ship ten years earlier and cost Zephyr his arm. Moya refused to hand over his subordinate 240.

Appearance

Weevil stands approximately 6.8 meters tall and has an enormous upper body supported by comparatively small legs 204 205.

  • Blond hair and a frequently running nose 196 208.
  • Thick arms that show little visible muscle despite his extraordinary strength 240.
  • Eyes that turn red when he becomes enraged 205 208.

Personality

Weevil is simple-minded, trusting, and strongly motivated by food and the idea of family. He obeyed Bakkin's orders to protect her, then accepted Moya as his “big brother” after Bakkin's apparent rejection and death. Moya was able to direct his grief toward the Whitebeard Pirates 204 205 206 207.

His childlike manner contrasts with his violence in battle. Believing the Whitebeard Pirates had killed Bakkin, he flew into a rage aboard the Moby Dick and attacked its commanders 208.

Abilities & Skills

Physical strength and durability

  • His strength is described as comparable to Whitebeard's in his youth. He sent Vista flying with a slash and later fought Moya to a draw in arm-wrestling; Moya privately considered Weevil stronger in raw power 196 204 240.
  • His exceptionally tough skin withstands cannon fire and sword attacks. Strawberry's blade failed to cut him, and he emerged apparently unharmed after Luffy struck him underground 205 293 315.
  • Wounds inflicted during his fight with the Whitebeard commanders vanished quickly 208.

Naginata combat

  • Weevil produces powerful slashes with his naginata, including a sweeping strike that destroyed a barrage of attacks aimed at Bakkin's ship 204 205.
  • His blade skill and reach kept Vice Admiral Tsuru from closing in on him 309.

Combat perception and martial arts

  • He intercepted incoming cannonballs with slashes, though the account leaves open whether this came from Observation Haki or instinct 205.
  • After watching fighters on Elbaf, he imitated their moves and learned most of the giants' martial techniques 418 419.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Naginata — Weevil's principal weapon 204 208.

Relationships

  • Miss Bakkin — Raised and directed Weevil while claiming to be his mother. Her denial of that relationship devastated him 196 204 205.
  • Moya — Claimed to be Weevil's big brother and recruited him through deception. Weevil remains protective of him 206 309.
  • Marco and the Whitebeard Pirates — Fought Weevil over his attacks on their subordinate captains and territories; Weevil later blamed them for Bakkin's death 205 206 208.
  • Zephyr — Seeks revenge for the recruit-ship attack in which Weevil killed Zephyr's students and severed his arm 240.
  • Wei Linglong — Regards Weevil as her uncle and hopes to surpass him 494.
