Background

Natasha was taken from her parents as a child, subjected to brutal training, and turned into a killing tool. The Red Room removed her uterus, depriving her of the ability to become a mother. She later defected and became a S.H.I.E.L.D. operative, where she fought alongside superhuman Avengers despite initially lacking powers of her own 497.

As an ace spy, she was highly observant and capable of extracting intelligence from minimal information. When Jean Grey and Ororo Munroe mistook her for Raven, Natasha immediately identified them as X-Men, inferred that Raven was hiding near Zhan Liu, and used their mistake to obtain their contact information 108.

Natasha is disciplined, vigilant, and difficult to deceive. Her suspicion is not indiscriminate: she recognizes genuine manipulation and turned Red Skull's own espionage tactics against him on Vormir 350 351.

Her training made her practical about seduction, infiltration, violence, and sacrifice. She could manage Zhan Liu's martial hall efficiently while concealing her interest in Stark's magnetic-field technology, and she was willing to volunteer herself when the Avengers believed a loved one had to die for the Soul Stone 110 348.

She handled practical concerns ranging from interior design to seismic resistance, fielded approaches from foreign organizations, and unsuccessfully tried to persuade Zhan Liu to adopt Stark's magnetic-field technology 110.

S.H.I.E.L.D. suspicion and Hydra investigation

While reporting on Zhan Liu, Natasha became suspicious of Director Garrett's methods and his explanation of the spatial gate incident. Her doubts proved significant as Hydra's infiltration of S.H.I.E.L.D. became increasingly apparent 211 446.

Alternate-universe Avengers and the Infinity Stones

Natasha helped the alternate-universe Avengers understand the local world's power structure. Although she agreed to infiltrate S.H.I.E.L.D. for the Space Stone, Hydra's takeover made the mission impossible; she chose to leave rather than become a disposable resource for a group that would not help against Hydra 346.

She seized the Mind, Power, and Soul Stones, killed Professor Hulk for the Soul Stone, and turned herself into a living Infinity Stone system in order to defeat Zhan Liu 413 414. Her final life-burning attack killed Zhan Liu, after which she took the Reality Stone and searched for the Space Stone 415.

Bug King transformation and death

Unable to bear the backlash of four Infinity Stones, Natasha repeatedly replaced failing hearts with those taken from Bug Race warriors. The technique gradually transferred insect traits into her body. After absorbing Bug Race blood and corpses, she transformed into the Bug King; the Celestial Destroyer then killed her and took the Infinity Stones 438.

Identity crisis and restoration

During the Skrull crisis, Natasha encountered an identical woman claiming to be her. Although DNA testing could not distinguish them, Fury accepted the Natasha with current S.H.I.E.L.D. mission memories and detained the bodysuited double, who later manifested a System and escaped 440 441.
