Personality
Lin Changsheng initially applies exacting standards to assessment disciples. He rated Bai Jing's first mission only Grade B, arguing that Bai Jing's caution, reliance on formations, and slow completion time did not meet Shangqing Mountain's expectations. 2 He was similarly frustrated when Bai Jing spent Ascension Coins on a lightness skill rather than more formations. 12
He is, however, willing to revise his judgment when presented with results. Bai Jing's perfected Minor Star Array, efficient mission strategy, and rapid improvement gradually earn his admiration; Lin changes the first mission's rating to Grade A and comes to value Bai Jing's resourcefulness. 8 17 His later conduct shows sustained concern for Bai Jing's cultivation, safety, resources, and political position within the sect. 50 106 120
History
Assessment observer
Lin Changsheng was assigned responsibility for a group of assessment disciples, including Bai Jing. He evaluated Bai Jing's first mission as Grade B despite objections from fellow observers, believing Bai Jing had relied too heavily on an unnoticed formation and avoided direct combat. 2
Bai Jing's subsequent progress changed Lin's view. After witnessing Bai Jing use a perfected Minor Star Array at the Third Stage of Qi and Blood to destroy Qing Hong, Lin recognized his formation talent, revised the earlier rating to Grade A, and began to believe Bai Jing could enter Shangqing Mountain's top three thousand. 8 Although he criticized Bai Jing's decision to learn a supreme lightness skill, he later approved of the strategy after Bai Jing used it to complete missions at remarkable speed. 12 17
Lin also escorted a group of outstanding Violet Cauldron and Array Dao talents to learn about the Heaven Scroll trials, explaining the stature of True Saints and the difficulty of choosing a suitable Heaven Scroll. 38 40
Recruitment to Spiritual Elegance Peak
After Bai Jing cultivated the Star Array to Minor Accomplishment in roughly one month, Lin resolved to recruit him into Spiritual Elegance Peak before others could act. 28 Bai Jing had nearly joined Array Dao Mountain, but Lin and Spiritual Elegance Peak secured him instead. Lin assured Bai Jing that the peak would provide Array Dao resources comparable to those available on Array Dao Mountain. 43 50
He provided Bai Jing with Star Array Formation, Geng Metal Array Basics, and Yi Wood Array Basics, supporting the junior disciple's formation studies. 50
Sword Holding Hall politics
Lin served in Spiritual Elegance Peak's Sword Holding Hall but was gradually sidelined after Jiang Zhishen took control of the peak's affairs. He warned Bai Jing not to join the hall, explaining that association with Jiang Zhishen and Jiang Zhiyuan could restrict Bai Jing's achievements and resources. 106
Bai Jing's extraordinary potential later improved Lin's standing. The hall appointed Lin to handle matters involving Bai Jing, and Jiang Zhishen avoided using the Thunder City reinforcement assignment against him because of Lin's connection to Bai Jing. 115 117 Lin also argued that Spiritual Elegance Peak should cover Bai Jing's Heart Contemplation Cave fees; the Vice Peak Master ultimately supported his position. 115
Support for a Tenth-Tier Potential
After Bai Jing illuminated all ten tiers of Star Positions, Lin helped convey sect support and delivered the key and waist token for Bai Jing's Upper Peak cave dwelling. He also instructed Bai Jing to keep the Sword Saint's life-saving jade pendant secret. 120
Lin later explained that Bai Jing's Divine Array assessment was deliberately arranged to be difficult but comparatively safe. Completing it would qualify Bai Jing for continued resource allocation without requiring the three missions expected of other Golden Core geniuses. 138 As Bai Jing's reputation made him a potential target of the Demon Domain, Lin continued to urge caution. 194
