Background & History

Reiko of Hope Middle School was an orphan who became acquainted with Lu Ming. Both were endangered by the schoolchildren's secret sacrifices to the Rabbit God, which targeted students without protection or influential backgrounds. 353

When Lu Ming arranged to sacrifice himself in exchange for her survival, Reiko made the same bargain independently: she chose to take his place during a game of Bamboo Cage Eyes. The other students killed her and threw her into the lake, while her final wish was for Lu Ming to live. 353 A later death report records that she was abused and beaten before being murdered; her body was hastily buried and the school concealed the crime. 345

The Rabbit God accepted Reiko's sacrifice first, taking her soul while leaving an empty shell at Hope Middle School. After Lu Ming imprisoned the Rabbit God inside Escape Rabbit God Town, her soul became Edo Reiko—the Rabbit God Town girl close to Kannagi Shichiro. 353

In Rabbit God Town, Reiko was expected to be selected as the Rabbit God's vessel. Her prayer ribbon carried the wish, “I want to be with Little Seven,” referring to Kannagi Shichiro; if she were chosen, that wish would lead to Shichiro's death as well. 332 343 Qi Si altered her ribbon and led her, Kurokawa Akira, and himself into an attempted escape from the town. 321 333

In the forest, Reiko became the vessel for the resentment of generations of sacrificed children and transformed into a ghost. Qi Si briefly disturbed her with her prayer ribbon, then exploited her feelings for “Little Seven” to establish a Soul Contract and crush her Soul Leaf, killing her. 325 344 Her death became Save Point ④, but required another child to take the Rabbit God's vessel role. 328

Reiko's mother later burned down the Edo Family home with herself and Reiko's remains inside, fearing that others would take her daughter's body. 360 By the end of the Instance, Reiko's remaining malice completed Reiko's Prayer Ribbon, allowing Qi Si to summon her vengeful ghost. 362
