Background / History

Lin Chen was born to a worker father and an unemployed mother; his family carried heavy Federal Foundation loans. He earned admission to a prestigious university and a scholarship through his own efforts. While returning from tutoring work, he intervened to protect a girl being harassed in an alley, was beaten to death by the attackers, and entered the Eerie Game after death. 5

His first Instance was Rose Manor, where he met Qi Si. Frightened, inexperienced, and eager not to appear useless, Lin Chen became dependent on Qi Si's advice. Qi Si deliberately selected him as a controllable piece, manipulated his trust, and used him to probe the manor's dangerous third floor. 4 5 19

Despite his fear, Lin Chen refused to save himself by sacrificing another Player when offered a death-substitution solution. His moral refusal stemmed from the same sense of justice that caused his death in reality. 13 After Rose Manor, he retained Qi Si's Not-So-Ordinary Blade, though his memories of the Instance's ending were incomplete. 152

Unable to locate Qi Si after becoming an Official Player, Lin Chen kept the blade and tried to emulate Qi Si's composure. He continued helping other Players, clearing Instances while hoping to meet Qi Si again as someone capable of being useful rather than protected. 152 207

Appearance

Lin Chen's undisguised appearance is youthful and delicate, with black hair, black eyes, and a pale complexion. 427 432

  • Usually appears as an ordinary college student outside Instances. 241
  • Used the [Human Skin Mask] to take on the intimidating appearance of Lin Crow: a thin, pale young man with sunken dark eyes. 285
  • During Beast Arena, the [Bird-Beaked Doctor] card altered his appearance: a dark-gray overcoat, black mist, and eyes described as deep enough to devour light. 313
  • After activating Lead Sheep, he manifests as a frail gray-white undead figure carrying a scepter and leading ghosts and monsters. 433

Personality

Lin Chen is fundamentally compassionate, conscientious, and unwilling to harm others for his own survival. He died protecting a stranger, rejected the idea of sacrificing another Player in Rose Manor, and repeatedly struggles with the morality of Qi Si's plans. 5 13 274

At the beginning of his Eerie Game career, he is timid and easily overwhelmed by ghosts, violence, and uncertainty. He nevertheless learns quickly: he follows clues carefully, notices subtle inconsistencies, studies guides, and gradually develops the ability to act under pressure. 12 257 283

Qi Si's influence pushes Lin Chen into a harsher role. As Lin Crow, he learns to conceal fear, negotiate with major guilds, direct other Players, and use intimidation strategically. Even so, he never fully accepts cruelty as natural; his leadership is defined by trying to protect as many people as possible. 243 285 313

His attachment to Qi Si is central to his decisions. Lin Chen recognizes Qi Si's manipulation and does not approve of his actions, but he believes Qi Si saved his life three times and feels compelled to repay that debt—even at the cost of his own humanity. 273 432 462
