Background

Teach was formerly a historian and a professor at MIT. Initially unwilling to accept the return of supernatural power, he became consumed by ambition once he saw humanity wield it. He abandoned the image of a polite, bearded academic and built the Teach Pirates around himself. 320

He established control over a harbor city in the Philippine islands, where superhumans, modified humans, mercenaries, and ordinary workers lived under his authority. His forces expanded by seizing territory and hunting Black Flames for supernatural resources. 320 321

Appearance

Teach is an enormously built, obese man whose size has been compared to a “Flesh Mountain.” In his later reanimated state, he is described as a three-meter-tall obese man. 320 669

  • Formerly presented as a cheerful, bearded professor who carried coffee. 320
  • Cultivates the image and manner of a pirate captain. 320
  • Uses black mud and white mist as the visible manifestations of his twin Kekkei Genkai. 400
  • Wears the Vajra Prayer Beads, which provide additional defense. 693

Personality

Teach is fiercely ambitious, opportunistic, and willing to stake his life on advancement. He values immediate glory and power over longevity, accepting assistance that shortens his lifespan in pursuit of Ghost Rank strength. 333 345

He can present himself as a heroic protector when it serves his plans, publicly holding defensive lines alone and gathering widespread praise. Behind that image, he treats alliances as disposable tools and has no belief in lasting companionship. 344 346 358

Teach is also a long-term strategist. Beyond personal strength, he invests in technology, secretly develops spacefaring infrastructure, and seeks to drive humanity into a “Great Age of the Universe.” 697 718

Abilities & Skills

Water Mirror Technique

Teach creates a water-like mirror that produces combat replicas of opponents.

  • Copied a Tiger Rank Black Flame, including its lion-like body and lightning abilities, then used the duplicate to turn the battle around. 333
  • Can use replicas to challenge stronger opponents, but could not overcome a gap of two major ranks while still near Tiger Rank. 318
  • His Tiger Rank promotion allowed him to create two replicas. 333
  • Lost the technique upon becoming a Great Demon, then recovered it after his resurrection. 361 400
  • Failed to copy Roman Cervantes’ Black Flash, demonstrating that replication does not guarantee acquisition of every technique. 694

Melting/Dissolution Release and Boil Release

Teach wields two Kekkei Genkai: corrosive black mud and destructive white mist or steam.

  • The black mud corrodes stone, spreads over surfaces, and can form large defensive or offensive constructs. 400
  • The white mist rapidly decays buildings, rocks, and soil into ash or liquid. 362 400
  • Dark Water: Erosion Break combines both releases into a wide-area corrosive mist. 362
  • His releases were specifically countered by Sora’s Explosion Release and Amame Ei’s Wood Release. 364

Black Mage / Mud Mage

Teach can form an enormous construct from his black mud.

  • The Black Mage absorbed Rufu’s Five Gates barrage during their battle. 364
  • The Mud Mage can produce rows of black-mud spikes and serve as a platform or protective body for Teach. 693 694

Reincarnated Constitution

Kuko Yoa restored Teach through Summoning: Impure World Reincarnation using a body created from captured Black Flames. 400

  • His reconstructed body is no weaker than Ghost Rank and retains his abilities. 400
  • Severe wounds regenerate without bleeding as broken fragments return and refill the damaged area. 694
  • Abe no Seimei removed the ritual’s control state, making Teach a “Released Impure Reincarnation.” 694
  • The Vajra Prayer Beads can reduce otherwise lethal damage to his body. 693 694

Earth Burrowing

Teach used Earth Burrowing to gather extraordinary materials from battlefields for his technological projects. 697

  • Divine Wood Ground-Effect Aircraft — A black, Divine Wood aircraft propelled by Teach’s Boil Release, capable of traveling at several times the speed of sound. 693

Relationships

  • Kuko Yoa — Ambitious partner and eventual master-like benefactor. She supported his rise, arranged his betrayal plan, resurrected him, and later issued him orders. 320 400 469
  • Bakis — First mate of the Teach Pirates. Bakis understood Teach’s true nature, but Teach ordered him to die for his dream. 352
  • Sora — Opponent whose appearance and strength Teach copied through Water Mirror Technique; she later joined Amame Ei in countering his Kekkei Genkai. 315 364
  • Paper Dancer — Great Demon whom Teach copied to confirm his Ghost Rank; he later cooperated with the Nine-Tails Faction before betraying it. 347 353 393
  • Roman Cervantes — Former associate and bitter enemy. Roman seeks revenge for Teach’s betrayal and repeatedly clashes with him. 364 693 694
  • Arlong — Sea Kingdom Folk who once admired Teach as an idol before Teach openly betrayed and mocked him. 352 693
  • TakashiKuko Yoa’s ally who initially regarded the resurrected Teach with suspicion; Teach later fought alongside him under Kuko’s command. 400 469
