Yamamoto founded the Genryu Style two thousand years ago, then established Genjuku as its training institution. A thousand years before the present story, Genjuku was renamed the Shinigami Academy; Yamamoto considers its graduates, including Shunsui Kyoraku and Jushiro Ukitake, his disciples. 133

He was selected to represent the Five Great Noble Clans’ effort to impose order on Soul Society. From numerous powerful fighters, he chose twelve to form the prototype of the Gotei 13, a ruthless force that would become Soul Society’s primary military organization. 283
