Background / History
Unohana was originally known as Unohana Yachiru, the First Kenpachi. She sought out powerful opponents, claimed mastery over every Kendo style in existence, and defeated countless challengers before being defeated by Genryūsai Shigekuni Yamamoto. She subsequently joined the First Generation Gotei 13 as the first Captain of the Eleventh Division. 3 233 336
Her later identity as the gentle Captain of the Fourth Division conceals a history centered on battle and slaughter. For Unohana, healing arts were initially a means of sustaining combat rather than an end in themselves. 48
She eventually stepped down from her Kenpachi role and became a dedicated healer, while retaining both her swordsmanship and an extensive anatomical knowledge developed through medical work and dissection. 268
Appearance
Unohana normally presents herself as a graceful, soft-spoken captain with a gentle smile and long dark hair arranged in a braid. Her composed appearance sharply contrasts with the killing intent and predatory aura she displays in battle. 48 198
- Wears a Captain’s haori and Shinigami uniform in her regular duties. 51
- Her braided hair is tied back with a Kenseikan; two strands frame her face. 198
- Changes into a white Kendo uniform with a red sash for sword exchanges. 49
- Has crisscrossing scars beneath her collarbone. 148
- Her Hollowfication manifests as a skeletal Hannya mask. 329
Personality
Unohana is patient, reassuring, and highly attentive in her duties as a healer and teacher. She calmly instructs academy students in Kendo fundamentals, critiques their weaknesses precisely, and encourages them to develop flexibility and courage in combat. 198 199
Beneath that refined exterior, she is driven by an intense desire for worthy battles. She takes visible pleasure in high-level sword exchanges, becomes disappointed when she arrives too late to witness a major fight, and can express lethal intent while maintaining a gentle smile and voice. 50 145 170
Her relationship with Su Feng allows this hidden side to surface more openly. She sees his growth as the emergence of a long-sought opponent and becomes increasingly invested in their dangerous training sessions. 50 86 233
Abilities & Skills
Kendo Mastery
As the First Kenpachi, Unohana is a Kendo grandmaster who has mastered more than eight thousand styles and can adapt to multi-sword techniques with ease. 3 277
- Her skill exceeds the limitations of the traditional tenth-dan ranking system; she is considered tenth dan only because the system has no higher classification. 50
- Uses distinct styles continuously in combat without repeating techniques, including methods apparently created or improvised by herself. 50
- Can overwhelm captain-class opponents with bamboo swords alone. 50 147
- Has experience countering two-sword, three-sword, and four-sword styles. 277
- Teaches foundational Kendo with equal authority in theory and practice. 198
Healing Kido and Medical Knowledge
Unohana is among Soul Society’s foremost healers, combining centuries of Healing Kido experience with exceptional anatomical knowledge. 148 268
- Healed the critically injured after Su Feng’s battle with Kenpachi Zaraki. 145
- Reinforced a Kido barrier with materialized Spiritual Pressure during a captain-level clash. 171
- Uses Healing Kido #7: Shinra Seisei to rapidly mend injuries. 286
- Mastered Life-Returning Heavenly Birth, a Reverse Healing Kido capable of combat-use healing with sufficient proficiency. 148
- Her healing expertise allowed her to surpass Su Feng in learning Life-Returning Heavenly Birth. 148
Hollowfication
Unohana underwent Hollowfication in Mugen to break through the limits of her stagnant power. 288
- Her Spiritual Pressure rose to Transcendent levels. 288
- Her combat style became more primal: every strike targeted vital points and existed solely for slaughter. 288
- The transformation intensifies both her speed and her desire to fight. 288
- Her Hollowfication was notably more difficult to complete than Soi Fon’s. 289
Bankai: Minazuki
Unohana’s Bankai, Minazuki, transforms the battlefield into a sea of blood and accompanies her most brutal fighting style. 288
- Creates an expansive blood-filled battlefield. 288
- Her blade becomes curved and constantly bleeds into the sea created by the Bankai. 298
- Permits sustained combat through repeated injury and recovery within the blood sea. 288
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Minazuki — Zanpakutō whose Bankai manifests as a sea of blood. 288 298
- Bamboo sword — used during her Kendo exchanges and academy instruction. 49 198
- White Kendo uniform — worn for unrestricted movement between Kendo styles. 49 76
Relationships
- Tsunayashiro Su Feng — Frequent Kendo partner, rival, and later intimate companion. Unohana mentors his swordsmanship while seeking increasingly dangerous battles with him. 48 50 76 134 233
- Genryūsai Shigekuni Yamamoto — Defeated Unohana in her past as Unohana Yachiru, leading to her enrollment in the First Generation Gotei 13. He remains wary of Su Feng rekindling her First Kenpachi nature. 86 233 336
- Kenpachi Zaraki — A combat prodigy whose strength and battle instinct drew Unohana’s interest; his victory over her was pivotal enough that she might otherwise have remained Eleventh Division Captain. 48 233
- Seinosuke Yamada — Fourth Division subordinate and Kido specialist. He guided her in learning Life-Returning Heavenly Birth. 148
- Isane Kotetsu — Fourth Division member who relies on Unohana’s authority and becomes overwhelmed by the Spiritual Pressure of a Hollowfied imitation of her captain. 298
- Saito Furofushi and Hachigen Ushoda — Former opponents from a thousand years ago who retain severe psychological trauma from encounters with Unohana Yachiru. Unohana keeps them under control in the Fourth Division. 336
Story Role / Major Arcs
Early Interest in Su Feng
Unohana recognizes Su Feng as a rare Kendo talent after observing his battle with Kaname Tōsen. Her interest stems from the prospect of meeting someone whose swordsmanship may rival her own. 3
Fourth Division Kendo Exchanges
After returning from herb gathering with the scent of blood concealed beneath gentian flowers, Unohana requests a Kendo discussion with Su Feng. Their exchanges rapidly develop into recurring sparring sessions in which she deliberately guides his growth while remaining overwhelmingly superior. 48 51 58
Nine years later, she resumes their exchanges and proposes that Kendo ranks be reclassified because the tenth-dan system cannot accurately distinguish their level of skill. 76
Academy Instruction
Unohana substitutes as a Kendo instructor at the Soul Reaper Academy. She defeats Renji Abarai, Tōshirō Hitsugaya, Rukia Kuchiki, and other students with ease while offering targeted advice on their strengths and weaknesses. 198 199
Escalation of Her Bond with Su Feng
Unohana’s exchanges with Su Feng become a normal part of Fourth Division life, extending from sparring to private tea discussions and increasingly intimate familiarity. 134
As Su Feng grows stronger, their training moves beyond the Fourth Division dojo and becomes increasingly lethal. Unohana learns Life-Returning Heavenly Birth, allowing her to heal while fighting and intensifying their battles. 145 148
Hollowfication in Mugen
Unohana demands priority in Soul Society’s Hollowfication project so that she can battle Su Feng without restraint. In Mugen, she Hollowfies, activates Minazuki, and fights Su Feng in an extended blood-soaked confrontation. 288 289
Reigai Impostor Incident
A Reigai replicating Unohana’s appearance, Spiritual Pressure, Hollowfication, and Bankai infiltrates the Fourth Division. Su Feng identifies the impostor by her scent; the duplicate is later exposed as a creation of Kagerōza Inaba. 298 299
Return of the Original Captains
During the crisis involving figures returned from Hell, Unohana uses Hollowfication against Chikiri Shijima and helps bring Hachigen Ushoda back to Soul Society’s side. She subsequently keeps both Hachigen and Saito Furofushi under her control in the Fourth Division. 329 335 336
