Structure and Geography

History

Hollowfication aftermath

Three years before the story's opening, several Captains and Lieutenants were Hollowfied and exiled, leaving major vacancies in the Gotei 13. Soi Fon, Aizen Sōsuke, and Sajin Komamura subsequently became Captains of Squads 2, 5, and 7 respectively. 1

Reform and noble unrest

As Captain of Squad 9 and later head of the Tsunayashiro Family, Su Feng repeatedly arrested nobles who committed crimes. His actions challenged the established feudal order and contributed to unprecedented political disruption within Soul Society. 27 32 229

Zanpakutō Rebellion

A mass Zanpakutō rebellion spread through the Seireitei, causing widespread fighting as materialized Zanpakutō attacked their wielders. The crisis ended after Kuchiki Kōga was killed and Muramasa was subdued, restoring the affected Shinigami's connections to their swords. 104 116

Arrancar and Wandenreich threats

Arrancar activity in the Human World exposed the existence of Menos Grande with Shinigami powers. Soul Society convened its Captains and assigned reconnaissance operations in Hueco Mundo. 217 218

As the Wandenreich threat intensified, Soul Society entered a state of war preparedness and developed anti-Quincy measures. 246 252

Reigai incident

Ōko Yushima used Reigai technology to create copies of Captains and incite chaos across Soul Society. His Aizen Reigai infiltrated the Underground Council Chamber and killed Central 46 before Yushima was captured. 304

Hell crisis

The return of deceased beings from Hell placed every division on alert. After Su Feng awakened Hell's Will, Mayuri Kurotsuchi and Kagerōza Inaba determined that the Gates of Hell could be reconstructed using Su Feng's Spiritual Pressure; the gates were subsequently rebuilt and used to return Hell's dead. 326 333 334

Known Threats

• Noble corruption — Lower Aristocrats have exploited Rukongai residents, monopolized resources, and targeted weakened noble families with little consequence. 5 27 35
• Ryūdōji Clan — Exiled members learned to control Missing Souls in the Dangai and sought to merge the Human World with Soul Society as revenge. 35 295
• Aizen Sōsuke — Used Soul Society's archives and research infrastructure to pursue the Soul King's power and wider ambitions. 109 276
