Background

Mayuri was formerly imprisoned in the Maggot’s Nest, a confinement facility for dangerous individuals. Kisuke Urahara had previously been capable of suppressing the facility’s inmates and removing Mayuri from it; nevertheless, the captains continued to regard Mayuri as an exceptionally unstable figure. 86

Before his formal captaincy, Mayuri served as Squad 12’s acting captain and caused a disastrous experiment that killed dozens of Shinigami and severely injured many more. He was later documented as the squad’s Third Seat and the Director of the Department of Research and Development. 32 59 96

His proposed promotion prompted concern because of his self-experimentation, disregard for safety, and history of unethical research. After Su Feng and Soi Fon evaluated his scientific accomplishments and Bankai, Mayuri ultimately became Squad 12’s captain. 86 98 99 159
