| First Appearance | Chapter 135 135 |
Background / History
Garp fought alongside Roger at God Valley and later became Roger’s persistent pursuer. Bogard has served at his side since that incident, despite being capable of commanding his own warship. 135
When Roger was imprisoned in Rogue Town, he entrusted Garp with protecting his unborn child and the child’s mother from the World Government. Garp accepted the request despite its risks. 188
By the beginning of year 1500, Garp had returned to his hometown with an infant and coerced mountain bandits into raising the child. He later subjected Luffy to harsh training intended to make him the strongest Navy soldier. 227 321
Personality
Garp is boisterous, impulsive, and intensely motivated by the chance to pursue powerful pirates—especially Roger. He treats Roger’s escapes as a personal challenge and will use destructive shortcuts to continue the chase. 135 139
Outside combat, he is generally approachable and well respected by his subordinates. However, he habitually damages doors, walls, ships, and infrastructure for unnecessary displays of strength, leaving his men to repair the results. 141
He refuses promotion to Admiral despite possessing combat power comparable to one, preferring freedom from the responsibilities that only an Admiral can handle. This leaves Sengoku carrying much of the Navy’s administrative burden. 140
Abilities & Skills
Extraordinary Physical Strength
Garp’s bare-handed striking power is powerful enough to alter naval engagements and destroy fortified structures.
- Uses punches to propel his warship forward, turning recoil into improvised acceleration. 139
- Has punched through countless mountains as part of his training. 140
- Uses decommissioned warships as training equipment; his attacks can capsize nearby vessels through aftershocks. 140
- Can personally throw cannonballs, reducing the need for conventional artillery crews aboard his ship. 141
- Destroyed the Goya Kingdom’s cast-iron city gate with a single punch. 349
Combat Experience
Garp is a veteran Navy combatant who has fought figures such as Roger, Chinjao, Bullet, and Golden Lion Shiki.
- His clash with Chinjao left injuries that local doctors could not treat. 134
- Alongside Sengoku, he defeated Bullet after the latter had already endured a Buster Call. 203
- His combat data and physical mannerisms were used as the basis for the Pacifista prototype PX0. 203 321
Training
Garp trains younger fighters through extreme, physically punishing methods.
- Personally trained Kuzan after Zephyr established Kuzan’s foundation. 142
- Trains Luffy with the stated goal of making him the strongest Navy soldier. 321 322
- Later has Luffy and Ace train alongside Origin Project: Garp. 353
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Dog-headed warship — Garp’s Navy vessel; he accelerates it by punching backward from the deck, though this damages the ship. 139
- Senbei — He frequently eats, hides, and offers rice crackers, often to Sengoku’s frustration. 349 355
Origin Project: Garp / PX0
PX0 is the first Pacifista prototype modeled after Garp, created by Dr. Siderial Oran for the Navy’s secret Pacifista project. The World Government selected Garp’s image because a Navy Hero was considered a more appropriate public symbol than the project’s earlier Shiki-based prototype. 203
| Aspect | Details |
|---|---|
| Designation | PX0 / Origin Project: Garp |
| Template | Garp’s recorded combat data, voice, appearance, scars, wrinkles, and movement patterns 321 336 349 |
| Authority | Garp was granted the highest authorization settings because he participated in its creation. 321 |
| Initial capability | Could physically handle an average Supernova but was still a learning unit rather than a complete combat Pacifista. 321 |
| Development concern | Its personality and behavior increasingly resembled Garp’s, alarming Sengoku. 354 |
Garp took PX0 from Marine Headquarters to train it himself, then used it to help train Luffy. 321 322 He later left the prototype for independent operations and assigned it to watch over Luffy. 349 351
PX0 intervened during the Goya Kingdom crisis, eliminated Sapphire Pirates captain Brulem, extinguished fires with frost-emitting drones, captured the king and nobles, and gathered evidence of their crimes. Navy branches initially mistook it for Garp himself, resulting in reports that Garp had rebelled. 349 351 352
Relationships
- Gol D. Roger — Longtime rival and pursuit target; Roger trusted Garp to protect his unborn child and the child’s mother. 135 188
- Sengoku — Longstanding Navy comrade; Sengoku relies on Garp’s strength but is repeatedly exasperated by his recklessness, refusal of promotion, and treatment of PX0. 140 321 354 355
- Bogard — Garp’s longtime subordinate and aide since the God Valley incident. 135
- Luffy — Garp’s grandson; Garp relentlessly trains him to become a Navy soldier, while Luffy wants to become Pirate King. 321 322 349
- Ace — Garp’s grandson whom he intends to train into the strongest Navy soldier. 275
- Kuzan — Former trainee whose further development was guided by Garp after Zephyr established his fundamentals. 142
- Dr. Siderial Oran — Developer of PX0; Garp provided combat data for the project and later trained the prototype. 203 207 321
- Origin Project: Garp / PX0 — Mechanical replica trained under Garp; its growing similarity to him becomes a major concern for Sengoku. 321 354
Story Role / Major Arcs
Pursuit of the Roger Pirates
After learning that Roger had appeared on Firefly Island, Garp immediately sailed there to capture him. He cut his travel time by more than half through repeated recoil-powered punches that made his warship “leap” across the sea. 135 139 140
Roger escaped, while Garp’s pursuit caused a shipwreck and damage to Firefly Island’s port. Sengoku ordered him back to salvage cargo, repair the dock, and transport equipment to Marine Headquarters. 140 141
Firefly Island Repairs
Garp personally joined the repair work after being held responsible for the destruction. Oran made him sign for the costs of both the original damage and the additional damage Garp caused while salvaging crates. 141 142
Pacifista Project
The World Government approved Oran’s proposal to develop Pacifistas using Garp as the public-facing template. Garp later assisted with combat-data collection and took PX0 for hands-on training. 203 207 321
Goya Kingdom Incident
After PX0 independently entered the Goya Kingdom, its actions were attributed to Garp. The real Garp initially laughed off the accusation, then realized PX0 had been sent to watch Luffy. 351
The incident exposed the kingdom’s crimes against its citizens, but it also demonstrated the danger of a developing combat robot interpreting orders and justice through Garp-like reasoning. 351 352 354
Notable Quotes
“Roger! Stop right there! I'm definitely going to capture you and throw you into Impel Down this time!” 139
“Puhahaha! Luffy! Grandpa's back! Are you ready to aim to be the strongest Navy and begin new training!” 321
Trivia
- Oran privately regarded Garp as a potential “Balance Sheet Hero” after the Vice Admiral was sent to repay the damage he caused at Firefly Island’s port. 141
- Garp’s habit of barging through doors is so established that he once arrived at Zephyr’s office with engineers prepared to repair the door afterward. 205
- Garp considered PX0’s behavior insufficiently similar to his own, while Sengoku feared that it had become far too similar. 354
