Background & History

Kate was born on Zou with a congenital heart condition. Her family left Zou in search of treatment, but they were enslaved by the Celestial Dragons; her parents died while attempting to escape. Captured alongside them, Kate was whipped for refusing to eat furred mammal meat and was eventually placed on a culling list. A doctor on Zou had already declared her condition incurable, leaving her convinced she had little time left to pursue revenge. 20 21

During her imprisonment, Kate escaped by twisting her left thumb free from her handcuffs, killing a guard, and fleeing alone. The effort left her injured, and Oran treated her hand. His kindness, along with his role in helping her escape God Valley, led Kate to pledge her remaining life to repaying him under the Mink Tribe’s custom of never leaving a debt unpaid. 20 29

Kate assisted Oran’s God Valley escape by generating the stable electrical field needed to modify the Hex Gate core. Her Mink static-electricity talent made her a crucial manual power source when the ship’s equipment was damaged. 21

Oran later replaced her failing heart with a custom Hextech Heart, Type I “Zaun Spark,” derived from principles associated with Zeri’s electrical abilities and adapted to Mink physiology. The operation saved her life and greatly enhanced her speed, strength, recovery, and electrical output. It also carried the risks of slowed physical development and eventual emotional loss if Kate failed to retain her sense of self. 37 38 40

After the founding of Piltover, Kate became one of Oran’s closest confidantes and a central combatant in the kingdom’s security forces. Her loyalty to Oran is rooted in both gratitude and conviction. She considers him family after he saved her life twice—first at God Valley and later through the Hextech Heart surgery—and she consistently acts to protect him, Piltover, and those she accepts as her own. 38 40 118
