Background / History

Akame was raised by the Empire as a tool of assassination. She survived brutal childhood training with Kurome, but the sisters were later separated because blood relatives were forbidden from serving in the same assassination squad. Her early life left her exceptionally capable, emotionally restrained, and unfamiliar with ordinary romance or even a normal sense of gender identity. 12 14

While serving the Empire, Akame encountered Iori repeatedly. Their first sword duel revealed the contrast between them: Iori fought with greater defensive awareness, while Akame's style was built entirely around achieving a kill regardless of personal risk. Though Iori defeated her, he spared her; their subsequent meetings developed into intermittent duels and mutual familiarity. 12

Through missions and conversations with those harmed by Imperial rule, Akame recognized that the Empire's nobles and officials were the source of widespread suffering. Nadjeta persuaded her to join the Revolutionary Army, but Akame's defection was exposed. She protected the injured Nadjeta by drawing pursuit away from her, becoming a wanted Imperial traitor. 12

During her escape, Akame was intercepted by Kurome. Injured and exhausted, she was forced to battle her younger sister and Kurome's corpse dolls while trying to avoid killing her. Iori intervened, enabling Akame to escape and later convincing her to save Kurome rather than abandon her to the Empire's brainwashing and drug dependency. 14 15

Following the fall of the Old Empire, Akame continued working with Night Raid to eliminate remnants of the former regime and foreign scouts. Eventually, she sought retirement so she could care for Kurome and live peacefully. Although she initially believed her violent past disqualified her from happiness, Iori persuaded her that she and Kurome should seek a future rather than hide from it. 59 60 141 142

Akame later accepted the Third Magic to remain alongside Iori and become stronger. She followed him to Soul Society, where she began Shinigami cultivation, was entrusted with protecting his grandmother and Nemu, and became a shop assistant at his grandmother's store. 197 224 225 237

Appearance

Akame is a black-haired, red-eyed young woman. At the time she became wanted by the Empire, she was sixteen years old and was described as having a cool, aloof appearance. 12

  • Long, straight black hair. 12 13
  • Red eyes; after divine empowerment, molten-gold light can appear within them. 12 403
  • Often carries Murasame at her waist. 59 141
  • Has a balanced, athletic build shaped by assassination training. 400

Personality

Akame is quiet, direct, and highly disciplined. Her upbringing conditioned her to act as a weapon, but she develops an independent moral compass after seeing the Empire's cruelty. She ultimately fights to protect ordinary people rather than simply obey orders. 12 13

Despite her cold exterior, Akame is softhearted and possesses a strong sense of justice. She willingly draws danger away from Athena during the battle with Kakkavet, and Athena considers her the most morally upright among Iori's confirmed partners. 401

Her greatest attachment is Kurome. Akame is prepared to sacrifice opportunities for her sister's recovery and initially views Kurome's wellbeing as a reason to withdraw from society. 196 She also carries guilt over her past killings and doubts whether she can live an ordinary life, though she does not believe strength itself is evil. 141 196

Akame is initially inexperienced and easily flustered regarding romance. Iori's teasing frequently embarrasses her, but she gradually acknowledges her love for him despite recognizing his manipulative and frivolous sides. 16 50 232 400

Abilities & Skills

Assassination Swordsmanship

Akame is a first-rate swordswoman whose combat style prioritizes decisive killing over defense.

  • Uses relentless offensive pressure and is willing to expose herself to danger to create a lethal opening. 12
  • Can coordinate precisely with Iori in battle, as demonstrated in their defeat of Izou. 23
  • Her killing intent and technique are formidable, though Izou's accumulated killing intent initially surpassed hers. 23
  • Retains the instincts and stealth discipline of an Imperial assassin even after gaining supernatural power. 401

Killing-Intent Perception

Akame can sense killing intent at a level surpassing the five senses.

  • Detected traces of Iori's presence while still serving the Empire. 12
  • Uses enhanced reactions and detection to prevent enemies from escaping during high-speed combat. 392

Murasame

Murasame is Akame's demonic blade and former Imperial Arm, later awakened as her Zanpakuto.

  • Its original cursed poison kills targets when it draws blood; even Akame once risked death if she cut herself. 224 232
  • The poison primarily affects physical bodies and can be mitigated through immediate amputation before it spreads. 224
  • As a Zanpakuto, its poison scales with Akame's spiritual pressure: it can instantly kill Vice-Captain-level opponents upon drawing blood and impede Captain-level foes. 401
  • Akame remains deeply attached to Murasame because it carried her through her life-or-death battles. 231 232

Murasame Shikai

Murasame's true Shikai is a Kido-based stealth technique.

  • Perfectly conceals Akame's spiritual pressure until she attacks. 401
  • At night, it can erase her visible figure, allowing her to merge with darkness. 401
  • It does not erase physical traces; airflow, sound, and footprints can still reveal her location. 401
  • Combined with her assassin training, it makes her exceptionally difficult to locate in darkness. 401

Lightning Emperor Summon

A gauntlet-type Imperial Arm formerly used by Iori and given to Akame after her Soul Materialization.

  • Controls and releases lightning. 199
  • Akame uses it primarily for self-enhancement rather than spellcasting. 199
  • Enables near-teleportation movement at full output and adds lightning damage to her sword strikes. 199
  • With the Third Magic and lightning divinity, she can sustain Flash of Lightning-like speed throughout prolonged battles, limited mainly by mental exhaustion. 392 401

Third Magic: Heaven's Feel

Akame undergoes Soul Materialization to obtain an immortal body and greater potential for spiritual cultivation.

  • Removes the normal compatibility restrictions that prevent ordinary users from wielding multiple Imperial Arms. 197 199
  • Provides the foundation needed to cultivate a Zanpakuto without relying on an Asauchi. 232
  • Supports sustained high-speed combat and the use of divine lightning. 401

Authority: Black Water

Akame acquires Black Water after becoming a Campione.

  • Refines and controls dark elements separated from the Primordial Water. 404
  • Can store the refined darkness as a consumable resource, with capacity tied to the strength of her soul. 404
  • Absorbs fluctuations, allowing it to cancel or dampen enemy attacks. 404
  • Does not fully negate Athena's divine blessing. 404
