Background / History
Eight hundred years before the present story, Yhwach, the King of the Quincy, led an elite surprise assault on Soul Society. The resulting casualties drove Yamamoto Genryūsai Shigekuni to establish the Thirteen Court Guard Squads. The Shinigami won, but did not fully eradicate the Quincy; descendants continued living in the Human World. 20
The central conflict between Quincy and Shinigami is their treatment of Hollows. Shinigami purify Hollows and return their souls to the cycle of the Three Realms, while Quincy destroy Hollows completely. Large-scale Quincy extermination of Hollows threatens the balance of the Three Realms, making coexistence unacceptable to Seireitei. 20
After the Battle of the Holy Son, the surviving pure-blood families were spared temporarily when D revealed that Yhwach might still be alive. Since the Quincy share a deep bloodline and soul-level connection with Yhwach, their extermination could erase the last traces connected to him. Soul Society instead placed the survivors under surveillance, restricted them to designated settlements, and authorized execution for violations. 151 152 154
Despite their apparent decline, another Quincy force endured for a millennium in an alternate dimension accessed through shadows. Calling themselves the Wandenreich, they protected Yhwach's coffin, rebuilt their strength, and awaited his return. 378 455
Yhwach eventually returned in a youthful body and reassembled the Wandenreich, granting new power to selected Quincy and rebuilding the Sternritter. 398 399 449 The Wandenreich later invaded Seireitei, employing shadow-based infiltration, Quincy ambushes, Bankai-stealing devices, and allied ReiKai to destabilize the Gotei 13. 455 461 462 463
Following Yhwach's defeat, Haschwalth submitted to Iori Aizen and symbolically broke Yhwach's black saber. Iori chose to preserve the Quincy lineage rather than eliminate it, citing the Spirit King's wish and the potential future value of Quincy power. 478
Traits and Society
- Quincy are living humans; after death, their souls ordinarily enter Soul Society. 24
- Their powers are inherited through Yhwach's bloodline, and every Quincy possesses a connection to the Quincy King. 151 458
- Pure-blood Quincy are rare, maintained through intermarriage among the surviving families; elite pure-bloods are rarer still. 136
- Quincy combatants typically wear white uniforms or robes, often with cloaks and cross or hexagram ornaments. 133
- They regard the protection of their dead as a serious duty, at times extracting a fallen comrade's soul into a Reishi emblem rather than allowing it to fall into Shinigami hands. 133
- Quincy strength is broadly determined by the scale and precision of their direct control over Reishi. 450
Abilities & Skills
Reishi Aggregation
The foundational Quincy ability is the absorption, concentration, and shaping of Reishi from the environment. Advanced users can also decompose Reishi-based matter and absorb it. 133 450
- Forms the basis of most Quincy techniques, including weapons, movement arts, and higher transformations. 450
- Uses the user's Reiatsu to contain and solidify gathered Reishi into a desired shape. 133
- Can dismantle Reishi constructs, though stable structures take longer to break down. 133
- Elite Quincy can absorb enormous quantities of ambient Reishi in battle. 135
Reishi Weapons
Quincy manifest weapons from condensed Reishi, most commonly bows and arrows, but also blades and crossbow-like constructs. 133 135 450
- Reishi arrows — Their principal ranged weapon; volleys can be fired in overwhelming numbers. 133
- Reishi light blades — Condensed melee weapons capable of clashing with Zanpakutō. 134 451
- Crossbow constructs — Can produce large barrages of light arrows. 135
- Arrow power can theoretically rise with the user's Reiatsu output. 147
Flying Swallow Legs
A Quincy high-speed movement technique based on Reishi aggregation. 133
- Described as more efficient than Flash Step. 133
- Supports rapid repositioning, aerial mobility, and ranged skirmishing. 133 456
- Commonly paired with Blood Dress to maximize mobility and offensive force. 147
Blood Dress and Kekkou
An innate talent of pure-blood Quincy that injects Reishi into the blood vessels, greatly enhancing the body. 134
- Blood Dress — Prioritizes movement speed and destructive power. 134 147
- Kekkou — Prioritizes endurance and defense; manifests as blue markings on the body. 134
- Kekkou can resist low- to mid-level Kidō and withstand Zanpakutō strikes. 147
- The techniques are tied to Quincy bloodline aptitude and are generally inaccessible to mixed-bloods. 135 476
Quincy Final Form
An extreme Quincy transformation achieved through harsh training with Spirit Scattering Gloves. 135
- Training suppresses the user's ability to absorb external Reishi; removing the gloves releases this restraint. 135
- The user's body draws in surrounding Reishi with black hole-like force, maximizing Reishi aggregation. 135
- Can produce attacks capable of threatening Captain-level opponents. 135 146
- Its primary drawback is the loss of Quincy powers after use, though recovery methods exist outside battle. 135
Saint Letters
Marks branded upon a Quincy's soul after receiving Yhwach's blood; each represents the recipient's greatest potential. 476
- Associated with the power granted by Yhwach and the Sternritter system. 449 476
- Function comparably to a Shinigami's Bankai in expressing an individual's soul-based potential. 476
- Can grant distinct abilities, such as Haschwalth's World Adjustment. 478
Perfected State
A higher Quincy life-form in which the user's Reishi structure is reorganized to maximize the effectiveness of their Saint Letter. 476
- Greatly increases Reiatsu and physical abilities. 476
- Considered above the Ultimate Quincy Form / Quincy Final Form. 476
- Fully mastered only by select Quincy blessed by Yhwach, including Haschwalth and Lille Barro. 476
Sankt Altar
Yhwach's large-scale recall technique, used to reclaim the souls and power distributed among Quincy. 467
- Draws scattered Quincy souls back into Yhwach as Reishi. 465 467
- Can target even pure-blood Quincy when Yhwach chooses not to show restraint. 467
- Strengthens Yhwach through the return of his distributed soul fragments. 467
Organizations
Quincy Clan
The traditional Quincy population, including descendants and pure-blood families living in the Human World. Their numbers rose rapidly before the first major war of the story, prompting Seireitei's planned subjugation campaign. 20
Wandenreich
The hidden Quincy empire formed by survivors of the earlier defeat. It remained concealed in a shadow-linked alternate dimension while guarding Yhwach's coffin and rebuilding its military strength. 378 455
- Yhwach — King and progenitor of the Quincy; source of their inherited powers. 151 467
- Haschwalth — Sternritter captain, Yhwach's chosen subordinate, and later the leader who submits the Quincy to Iori Aizen. 379 478
- Lille Barro — Yhwach's first creation and a powerful Quincy loyal to Haschwalth and the King. 379 449
- Sternritter — High-level Quincy combatants empowered through Yhwach's blood and Saint Letters. 449 455
Relationships
- Yhwach — Progenitor and King; Quincy powers are inherited through his bloodline, and their souls remain connected to him. 151 458
- Soul Society / Gotei 13 — Longstanding enemy; the Quincy method of destroying Hollows threatens the Three Realms' balance. 20
- Iori Aizen — Defeated key Quincy figures, later preserved the race and accepted Haschwalth's allegiance. 136 478
- Spirit King — Holds sympathy for the Quincy and does not wish for their complete extinction. 478
Trivia
- The Quincy are described as “destroyers” whose existence nevertheless has a place in a complete spiritual cycle. 478
- Quincy technology includes Bankai-stealing badges, soul-sealing countermeasures, shadow-domain infiltration, and devices intended to improve Reishi aggregation. 450 453 456 461
- Yhwach's revival and the surviving Quincy bloodline were considered more dangerous to Soul Society than the clan's remaining conventional military strength. 378
