Background / History
Tang San initially attends Nuoding Academy as a work-study student. His adherence to Tang Sect rules leaves him overlooked during a conflict with senior students, causing humiliation and resentment toward Jiang Liang. Yu Xiaogang learns of the incident and acts on Tang San's behalf. 35
He is Yu Xiaogang's disciple and one of only three known possessors of Twin Martial Souls. Yu Xiaogang encourages him to rely on his theoretical guidance, Blue Silver Grass, and eventual second martial soul, convincing Tang San that he can surpass Jiang Liang in the future. 43 56
After six years of training, Tang San reaches level 29 and challenges Jiang Liang at the Graduation Tournament, wagering that the loser must obey one command from the winner. Jiang Liang defeats him in a single move, badly damaging Tang San's confidence. 53 54 Yu Xiaogang attributes Jiang Liang's strength to forbidden methods and renews Tang San's determination to reclaim what he believes he has lost. 56
Tang San later joins Shrek Academy and participates in Zhao Wuji's entrance test. He uses Tang Sect techniques and poisoned hidden weapons against the Soul Emperor, but Zhao Wuji overwhelms him after restricting his mobility; Tang San is severely injured and loses consciousness. 109 110
During the Star Dou Forest expedition, Tang San refuses several possible spirit beasts while seeking a control-type ring with powerful poison. He eventually acquires a 1,200-year venomous spider Soul Ring and obtains Spider Web Restraint. 128 139
Following the expedition, he reaches level 31 and challenges Dugu Yan in a friendly exchange. Her Poison Dragon's poison rapidly withers his Blue Silver Grass, while her Eight Spider Lances External Soul Bone enables her to overwhelm him. 146 147
Ah Yin's recovery as the Blue Silver Emperor later affects Tang San directly: his Blue Silver Grass shrinks, loses its luster, and becomes less tough and less effective at control. Yu Xiaogang cannot identify the cause. 185 186
After Shrek's group joins Thunderclap Academy, Tang San is placed on the Thunderclap Team's main roster. He creates the third-ranked Tang Sect hidden weapon, Yama's Invitation, and continues training to surpass Jiang Liang. 223 231
During the Continental Advanced Soul Master Academy Elite Tournament, Tang San publicly reveals the Clear Sky Hammer as his second martial soul. He uses it to deliver the decisive strike in Thunderclap Team's victory over Elephant Armored Academy. 255
Tang San is later arrested as the chief suspect in Fourth Prince Xue Beng's poisoning after Yama's Invitations and numerous poison-coated hidden weapons are found in his storage Soul Tool. Although he is released, he remains unable to clear himself of suspicion and becomes increasingly convinced that Jiang Liang framed him. 267 269 270 271
After Spirit Hall detains Yu Xiaogang, Tang San is severely wounded in an ambush en route to Spirit City. Despite Tang Hao's demand that he withdraw after recovering, Tang San refuses to leave the finals, intending to clear Yu Xiaogang's name. 278 282 283
Appearance
Tang San is initially described by observers as seemingly frail, though his combat ability surprises those around him. 41
- Possesses the Blue Silver Grass martial soul. 53
- His hands become jade-white when using Mysterious Jade Hand. 147
- After Jiang Liang's level-breakthrough training, he is left with a black eye and broken nose. 126
- When his Blue Silver Grass deteriorates, its golden patterns become dull and the manifested grass becomes visibly smaller. 185 186
- His second martial soul manifests as an enormous pitch-black Clear Sky Hammer. 255
Personality
Tang San is proud, competitive, and intensely unwilling to concede defeat. His rivalry with Jiang Liang repeatedly drives him to challenge, provoke, or attempt to surpass him, even when the difference in strength is apparent. 53 54 122
He is devoted to Yu Xiaogang, nursing his teacher for three days after his collapse and repeatedly accepting his reassurance regarding their disputed theories. 43 56 Tang San also remains resilient under physical pain and defeat, pushing through a brutal breakthrough and continuing to pursue stronger Soul Rings. 126 139
His feelings for Xiao Wu fuel jealousy toward Jiang Liang. He visits her daily, follows her to Suotuo City, and unsuccessfully tries to turn her against Jiang Liang. 94 96
Tang San is highly suspicious and vindictive when he believes himself wronged. His arrest over Xue Beng's death intensifies his obsession with proving Jiang Liang's guilt, despite his inability to produce evidence. 267 271
He remains resolute in the face of danger, refusing to withdraw from the Spirit City finals because he wants to vindicate Yu Xiaogang. 283
