Background / History

Kakashi is the son of Hatake Sakumo, Konoha's famed White Fang. Sakumo abandoned a mission objective to save his comrades, endured condemnation from both villagers and the comrades he saved, and ultimately took his own life. 12

Before becoming Uchiha Isho's instructor, Kakashi and the Third Hokage observed Isho's unusual strength and character. Although Kakashi was initially skeptical of Hiruzen's description of Isho as lazy, he recognized the student's potential and unusual physical ability. 25 27

Hiruzen assigned Kakashi to lead the one-man Team 6, with Isho as its sole member. Kakashi tested Isho's values with a battlefield dilemma; Isho's decision to transmit vital intelligence before returning to save a comrade earned Kakashi's rare genuine smile. 28
