Background

Su Ye gives the large black dog the name Black Emperor after calling it his mount. The dog initially objects, believing “Emperor” is too lofty a title and requesting to be called “Black King” instead, but Su Ye refuses the change. 8

In the Mist Mountains, Black Emperor kills two cultivators and accompanies Su Ye through a region of illusions, spatial turbulence, and Evil Spirits. His instinctive caution contrasts with Su Ye's willingness to investigate danger. 10 11

Much later, Su Ye uses a time-and-space summoning to call Black Emperor from the future as an experimental subject. The summoned being arrives as a gigantic black dog head spanning the sky, but the Gate of Origin nearly devours his manifested consciousness. 429 430

After descending into the Desolate Region, Black Emperor loots treasuries, digs graves, and seeks rare treasures to stabilize his dissipating primordial spirit. Shi Yi's Double Pupil wounds him by seeing through his weakened manifestation. 433

Appearance

Black Emperor's usual form is a large, pitch-black dog, variously described as scruffy, glossy black, and imposing when empowered. He can also assume a black-robed human form. 624 650 671

  • A massive black dog head can manifest across the sky, obscuring the sun. 430
  • His giant Dharma Image fills the firmament and displays visions of creation and destruction in its eyes. 569
  • In human form, a phantom of a small black dog appears behind him. 650
  • He can project a far larger heavenly-dog form through Immortal Flowers or the River of Time. 632 720

Personality

Black Emperor is boastful, theatrical, and intensely proud of his self-proclaimed imperial status. He routinely calls others “human pets,” demands tribute, and claims to represent loyalty, kindness, and righteousness despite his reputation for grave-robbing, theft, and deception. 431 502 512

He is greedy for divine medicines, Dao Sources, supreme treasures, and materials that can restore his body. His greed is tempered by survival instinct: when faced with danger he frequently attempts to flee, uses others to test traps, or presents himself as a harmless victim. 477 481 503 505

Despite his bluster, he takes genuine pride in rising from an ordinary dog to an immortal-level existence. He also possesses extensive experience with ancient eras, Dark Matter, runes, and the irregularities of time and space. 593 624 626
