Background / History

Arrival in the Universal Century

Before arriving in the Universal Century, Eli was a twenty-first-century reporter with a strong belief that people deserved to know what was happening in the world. He reported from war zones in Pakistan and Ukraine and investigated Japan’s nuclear-wastewater issue. During a visit to Gundam Base in Japan, he was crushed by a falling Unicorn Gundam statue and awakened in the body of a Federation soldier. 3 69

He first served on Island Iffish as a Swordfish pilot. After surviving the poison-gas disaster there and shooting down a Zaku, he was selected among the Federation’s early Mobile Suit pilots and assigned to the Southeast Asia Front. 3

Southeast Asia Front

Eli became the only operational pilot remaining in the 06th MS Team after a reckless pursuit into a Zeon encirclement left his teammates severely injured and their Gundam Ground Types wrecked. He salvaged parts from the damaged units to keep his own machine operational, earning a reputation as a “Grim Reaper” among the base personnel. 3 12

Captain Kojima later combined the depleted 06th MS Team with Shiro Amada’s 08th MS Team. Shiro became commander while Eli served as the unit’s ace pilot during the search for Zeon’s hidden factory. 3

His pragmatism does not make him indifferent to his comrades. He was disturbed by the EXAM System’s potential to turn him against allies, repeatedly advocates taking enemy remnants alive when possible, and praises subordinates who protect one another. 54 130 176

Eli’s original journalistic ideals remain central to his decisions. He initially considered standing aside and observing the Universal Century’s events, but ultimately resolved to act for the future of the Earth Sphere.
