Background

Tobirama is Hashirama Senju’s surviving younger brother. The deaths of their other brothers during the Warring States period shaped both brothers’ desire to end the era of clan warfare. Even without Wood Release, Tobirama’s Water Release was renowned across the ninja world, and he was considered a combatant just below the era’s two “gods,” Hashirama and Madara. 1 2 4

His arranged engagement to Shizuka Sarutobi was intended to secure a Senju–Sarutobi alliance. The Uchiha interrupted the wedding and abducted Shizuka; after she returned pregnant, Tobirama, consumed by rage, forced her to abort. A later night with Shizuka resulted in the birth of Hiruzen, whom Tobirama refused to acknowledge as a Senju. Shizuka instead arranged for her brother Sasuke Sarutobi to adopt him. 6 8

The incident left Tobirama deeply hostile toward the Uchiha and initially unwilling to support peace with them. Senju Fujima helped him recognize that war—not Shizuka—was the source of his suffering. Tobirama reconciled with Shizuka, accepted responsibility for his feelings, and committed himself to ending the cycle of war. 8 9 14

Personality

Tobirama is disciplined, pragmatic, and intensely protective of Konoha’s future. As Root’s leader, he prioritizes the safety of children and directs elite forces against enemies he considers too dangerous for ordinary shinobi. 99

His early resentment toward the Uchiha was rooted in personal trauma and wartime loss rather than simple clan prejudice. Once confronted with that truth, he redirected his anger toward war itself and became a supporter of peace. 6 9

Tobirama initially resists Fujima’s proposal to make peace with the Uchiha due to his past with Shizuka. After reconciling with Shizuka and recognizing war as the true cause of his grief, he joins Hashirama’s effort to negotiate peace. 6 9 14

Becoming the Two-Tails’ Host

Following Madara’s capture of Matatabi, Tobirama agrees to have the Two-Tails sealed within himself. He accepts the physical burden because he wants to test the beast’s soul-devouring power and strengthen Konoha’s capabilities. 64 65

As Root leader, Tobirama faces Kirigakure’s invading force. He uses Two-Tails Chakra Mode, Water Clones, special kunai, sensory tactics, and Impure World Reincarnation to decimate the enemy and turn revived Kirigakure shinobi against their own village. 99 100

Second Hokage and the Apparent Fujima Rebellion

When the figure believed to be Fujima seeks to seize the Hokage position, Tobirama protects Tsunade and the other children from the battle’s aftershocks. He then uses a marked clone to strike the attacker from behind, refusing to let his brother be killed. Hashirama subsequently names him the Second Hokage. 205 206 207

Hiruzen’s Betrayal and Imprisonment

Tobirama is deceived when Hiruzen calls him “Dad,” then is pierced with black rods and sealed through Six Paths—Planetary Devastation. Fujima later breaks the lunar seal, frees him, and wakes him with medical ninjutsu. 220 238

Hiruzen’s Resurrection
