Background

Yu Xiaogang was born into the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan as Yu Yuanzhen's son. A mutation of his Martial Soul left him mocked as “trash,” driving his lifelong investment in Martial Soul theory and his need to prove his worth through teaching. 260 168

He was formerly Bibi Dong's lover and left Spirit Hall more than twenty years before seeking her aid again. He later entered a taboo relationship with Liu Erlong and remained close friends with Flender. 110 111

Yu Xiaogang is deeply devoted to his students, particularly Tang San. He repeatedly places Tang San's cultivation, safety, and tournament prospects ahead of his own pride, even kneeling before Bibi Dong to seek knowledge of Twin Martial Soul cultivation. 110 111

His care for Shrek is entangled with a powerful desire for recognition. Having spent much of his life dismissed as useless, he sees the Soul Master Tournament and Tang San's success as his opportunity to validate his theories and establish his name. When Leng Jun's group confronts Shrek over Xiao Wu's identity, Yu Xiaogang attempts to reason with the stronger party rather than provoke an unwinnable battle. Privately, he considers abandoning Xiao Wu to save the rest of the group, though he cannot bring himself to say it. 63 67

Seeking Bibi Dong's aid

After Shui Bing'er's rise threatens Shrek's tournament prospects, Yu Xiaogang travels to Spirit City. He informs Bibi Dong of Shui Bing'er, Tang San's Twin Martial Souls, and Xiao Wu's identity, then kneels to request the method for resolving Twin Martial Soul cultivation difficulties. 103 110 111

Bibi Dong agrees to help only after demanding that he break from Liu Erlong. Yu Xiaogang accepts the condition, prioritizing Tang San and his own dream of proving himself. 111

Soul Master Tournament downfall

Crippling and refuge in Spirit City

As Shui Bing'er's prestige grows, Yu Xiaogang attempts to seek Bibi Dong's help again and is escorted toward Spirit City by Ghost. Shui Bing'er intercepts them; Xu Feng, acting through her body, cripples Yu Xiaogang as a warning to Bibi Dong. 211 212

Yu Xiaogang loses his left eye and right leg, then receives prosthetics and refuge in the Pope Palace. There, he learns of the destruction of the Strength Clan and Clear Sky Sect and suffers a breakdown. 214 222

Final conflict

Yu Xiaogang later reunites with Liu Erlong and Flender while relying on his prosthetic leg. During the conflict between gods and Soul Beasts, Leng Jun attacks him in retaliation for Tang San's earlier ambush, killing Flender and Liu Erlong and leaving Yu Xiaogang severely injured. 263 271
