Mandate and Authority
The Six Doors' central purpose is not impartial case-solving or preserving martial-world harmony, but governing and suppressing the Jianghu. It distinguishes between those who obey its rules and those who do not, rather than between righteous and demonic factions. 196
- It generally leaves private Jianghu feuds alone unless they threaten wider stability or cannot be contained by local forces. 196
- It seeks to keep one dominant martial force in a county and one recognized martial leader in a province, making the Jianghu easier to manage. 196
- Major sects and gangs are expected to register, accept supervision, and undergo annual review. 164
- The Capital City branch mainly administers regional Six Doors branches; the Imperial City Division and Night Division hold greater intelligence authority within the capital. 109
- The organization is not politically unified. Its members and branches may be entangled in competing court factions. 123
Organization
Personnel and ranks
The Six Doors has separate civil and martial positions. Civil officials handle administration, while martial officers and constables pursue criminals. 309
| Position / Group | Known function or example |
|---|---|
| Inspector | Regional leader; Zhuo Qingfeng serves as Inspector of the Mobei Six Doors. 171 |
| Thousand Household Commander | Senior martial officer; Wang Mingxiu held this rank before his betrayal. 119 120 |
| Deputy Thousand Household Commander | Senior deputy position; Chen Yin serves in this role in Mobei. 153 |
| Commander | Senior officer assigned to the newly integrated Mobei branch. 171 |
| Constables | Field personnel who conduct arrests, form battle arrays, guard prisoners, and assist investigations. 115 177 |
Zhuo Qingfeng is described as the Six Doors' foremost constable rather than its overall head; his martial reputation makes him the organization's public face in Linjiang City. 309
Field methods
- Wanted notices and bounty operations — The Six Doors issues warrants for notorious criminals and mobilizes constables to capture them. 170 171
- Battle arrays — Constables can rapidly organize formations using iron chains against powerful martial artists. 177
- Prisoner transport and interrogation — It escorts captives, reviews case files, and employs specialists in mental secret methods, though such methods have failed against Green Leaf Hall's compartmentalized members. 128 130
- Registration and review treaties — The organization uses administrative agreements to place sects under formal supervision. 164
- Public deterrence — Its officers deliberately publicize captures and trials to build prestige and discourage defiance. 164
Regional Operations
Linhai and the Seven Absolutes Pavilion
The Six Doors became involved in uncovering the Seven Absolutes Pavilion's connection to the Seven Departments Dark Guards and the historic kidnapping of more than ten thousand children. 118
Its Linhai branch was compromised by Thousand Household Commander Wang Mingxiu, a surviving descendant of the Mu family. Wang colluded with Madam Liu and the Seven Absolutes Pavilion while using his position within the Six Doors to further his revenge. 119 120
The organization also suffered major losses during the Grand Manager's operation: assassins infiltrated its defenses, kidnapped Eastern Border Teacher, and killed four Night Division Commanders. 117
Cang Province and Green Leaf Hall
The Six Doors spent years investigating Green Leaf Hall, but struggled because the organization had no fixed headquarters and operated through isolated, single-line contacts. 128 130
During the pursuit of Shangguan Shang, the Six Doors and local officials arrived to take custody after Gu Mo captured him. 129 The investigation eventually exposed Old Madam Lin as Green Leaf Hall's master, triggering a Six Doors investigation of the Lin family and destabilizing the Cangzhou Jianghu. 123
Mobei integration
Mobei's pre-existing Six Doors offices were largely nominal: they were controlled by local magnates, lacked influence over sects and demonic martial artists, and were neglected by provincial headquarters. 171
Zhuo Qingfeng was appointed Inspector to integrate the region into a new prefectural-level Six Doors yamen. The branch answers directly to the Six Doors headquarters of Qing, Hong, and Yun Provinces rather than local county or prefectural governments. 171
Its stated challenges were:
- Resistance from local magnates and martial sects.
- Mobei's vast, difficult terrain.
- The concentration of powerful and openly defiant Demonic Path masters. 171
To establish authority, the Mobei Six Doors pursued high-profile captures such as Old Impermanence Ghost and the Dragon Tiger Twins. It compelled the Tongshan Sect to accept review treaties, invited aggrieved sects to observe Old Impermanence Ghost's trial, and used these actions to draw other forces into Changling County. 164
During the Zombie Skill crisis, Zhuo Qingfeng also intervened to prevent sects from indiscriminately massacring Peach Blossom Mountain Manor residents in retaliation against Ke Wenshui. 158
Key Personnel
- Zhuo Qingfeng — Inspector of the Mobei Six Doors and its leading martial constable; uses wanted-criminal campaigns, sect reviews, and public trials to extend the organization's authority. 171 164 309
- Du Sha — Six Doors leader involved in investigating the Heavenly God Society; cooperated with Gu Mo after their initial clash at the Dongli Sect. 18
- Wang Mingxiu — Former Thousand Household Commander who secretly allied with Madam Liu and the Seven Absolutes Pavilion; exposed as a traitor to the Six Doors. 119 120
- Chen Xiuyuan — Six Doors constable active in Mobei operations, including the pursuit of Old Impermanence Ghost and the Dragon Tiger Twins. 168 169
- Chen Yin — Deputy Thousand Household Commander in the Mobei Six Doors. 153
- Zhong Lianshan — Thousand Household Commander active in the Mobei branch. 145
Notable Operations
- Heavenly God Society investigation — Investigated suspected Heavenly God Society members concealed within the Dongli Sect. 18
- Defense against the Seven Absolutes Pavilion — Defended the Yanluo County Hundred Household Office and pursued the pavilion's infiltrators and assassins. 115 120
- Green Leaf Hall investigation — Conducted a long-running investigation into Green Leaf Hall's decentralized network and its leadership. 128 130
- Old Impermanence Ghost capture — Apprehended Sang Guhong and used the case to pressure the Tongshan Sect into accepting Six Doors oversight. 168 164
- Zombie Skill investigation — Investigated blood-drained deaths, the Great Saber Sect's annihilation, and suspected Zombie Skill practitioners across Mobei. 161 162 163
- Silver Fox ambush — Attempted to protect Wang Yuanbao and capture the Silver Fox, but the assassin escaped after killing Six Doors experts and the target. 308
Limitations and Controversies
- The Six Doors' stability-first approach can leave murders and disappearances unresolved when they are judged to be private Jianghu disputes. 196
- Its leadership may exploit crimes and sect conflicts as opportunities to expand administrative control. Zhuo Qingfeng explicitly viewed the Mobei Zombie Skill crisis as a means to intervene in the regional martial world. 163 164
- Local sects resist its supervision because registration and review can shut down illicit businesses, curb extortion, and reduce their autonomy. 164
- Even senior officers can be compromised, as shown by Wang Mingxiu's betrayal. 119 120
