Background / History

Ye Jinglan and Chu Tianqing were fellow disciples of the Qing Province master He Qizheng. After their master's death, they entered the Jianghu, rapidly made names for themselves, and established forces of their own. Seven years before the events at Soul Severing Cliff, both pursued Qing Province's foremost beauty, Zhuo Fanghua; her choice of Chu Tianqing led to Ye Jinglan causing a disturbance at their wedding and fighting Chu to a draw. Their shared organization subsequently split into the Heavenly Blade Sect and the Nine Rivers Alliance. 206

As leader of the Heavenly Blade Sect, Ye Jinglan expanded through the Heavenly Blade Decree: those who submitted joined his sect, while those who refused were challenged or driven from their territory. The campaign made the sect a dominant force in Qing Province's Jiang You region, though Ye Jinglan did not indiscriminately massacre opposing sects. 206
