Background

Ryan is a transmigrator whose original soul came from Earth. Before his death, he was an engineering graduate student who died saving a child from an oncoming truck. His soul passed through a spatial rift and was reborn into Waterdeep's noble House Chris, retaining his memories and gaining enhanced logical and spatial reasoning. 4

His soul mutation also awakened the “System,” a Chinese-language portable memo pad with a simple AI. It records notes, inspirations, and spell models, but does not grant missions or directly increase his power. Ryan later uses it to preserve and organize magical information beyond ordinary mental limits. 4 5

Born as the youngest—also identified as the third—son of Count Chris, Ryan rejected the expected life of a noble heir. At eight or nine, he forced his parents to allow him to study magic in Silverymoon, ultimately entering Yefalin's mage tower. His talent, discipline, and lack of arrogance led Yefalin to accept him as her final disciple. 4 6 17

Ryan received a remnant Spark during his passage through time and space. After becoming an intermediate mage, the Spark began to awaken; he eventually absorbed it and became a Planeswalker Apprentice, inheriting the legacy of the dwarven Planeswalker Augustus. 5 19 20

Appearance

Ryan is a handsome young mage with sun-bright golden hair, blue eyes, fair skin, and a lean but explosively strong build. After consuming the Dragon Blood Potion, he grew from approximately 1.65 m to 1.80 m. 19 28

  • Usually wears hooded or formal mage robes to avoid attracting attention with his appearance. 7 14
  • Carries an ornate cold-iron-and-adamantine staff with a perfect sapphire set in its head. 12
  • Has a faint, living Spark mark on his chest, visible after he dispels his dragon form. 39
  • His partial dragon form manifests fiery red scales, facial plates, spikes, and a monstrous physique. 38 39

Personality

Ryan is intensely curious, analytical, and devoted to magical advancement. His Earth education and engineering background shape how he approaches magic: he tests theories, applies mathematics to spell structures, and treats magical systems as problems to be modeled and optimized. 1 4 5

He is cautious to the point of paranoia about survival. Ryan prefers preparation, layered defenses, escape options, and unconventional weapons over direct risks; he keeps his Planeswalker identity secret because he fears powerful mages or demigods would seek his immortality. 7 20 47 48

Despite his guarded exterior, Ryan is considerate toward people he trusts. He reassures Bill, protects Jelona and his companions, and recognizes the danger of involving others in threats aimed at him. He can also be ruthless toward enemies, having deliberately learned to kill in order to survive in Faerûn. 7 11 15 16

Abilities & Skills

Wizardry and Arcane Analysis

Ryan is an intermediate mage with unusually strong magical-model analysis, spatial reasoning, and spellcasting fundamentals. He can partially cast spells outside the Weave, though initially only a limited range of first- and second-circle spells. 4 5

  • Spell Power — increases the intensity of his spell effects. 4
  • Still Spell — permits spellcasting after a spell action without consuming spell materials. 4
  • Uses practical combat and utility magic, including Feather Fall, See Invisibility, Fly, Fireball, Light, Magic Missile, Grease, and Sleep. 4 10 11 13
  • Obtained fourth-circle models for Dimension Door and Wall of Fire; Dimension Door can teleport himself, carried objects, and touched creatures within 400 feet. 25 29
  • Uses Spell Eye to observe enemies and navigate safely. 13 26

Planeswalker Powers

As a Planeswalker Apprentice, Ryan can turn spells, weapons, and other power projections into cards. His inherited time-space functions as both a deck source and a concealed storage realm. 19 20

  • Free-Cast Technique — casting outside the Weave halves the difficulty of his next spell and may randomly cast an eligible spell from his library; it can trigger twice daily. 3 28
  • Card hand limit — can maintain six cards in hand and draw three cards daily. 28
  • Land limit — can possess up to twelve Land cards. 28
  • Mana supplyWestern Wasteland generates 12 white mana daily, while Maribo Forest generates 5 green mana daily. 3 28
  • Immortality conditionPlaneswalker longevity depends on continually paying increasing mana costs; insufficient accumulation leads to “eternal silence.” 20
  • His Spark resists divination and obscures him from prophetic tracking. 48

Dragon Bloodline

The Dragon Blood Potion reinforced Ryan's body and awakened red-dragon traits. 28

  • Fire Breath — acquired as a red dragon spell-like ability. 28
  • Dragon Skin transformation — produces protective scales strong enough to survive standard crossbow bolts without a spell shield. 38 39
  • Limit: transformation tears through ordinary robes due to erupting scales and spikes. 39
  • Limit: draconic instincts make him more volatile, violent, and arrogant while transformed. 39

Staff Fighting and Survival Combat

Ryan trained his body from childhood and studied staff fighting under a monk hired by House Chris. His mage class does not prevent him from fighting effectively at close range. 3 12

  • Combines Exhaustion, Bull's Strength, and Cat's Grace with staff techniques to suppress melee opponents. 12 13
  • Uses crossbows, bows, alchemical bombs, toxins, traps, and low-level crowd-control magic to compensate for limited spell slots. 47
  • Defeated a high-level drow assassin through detection magic, staff combat, buffs, deception, and Jelona's assistance. 11 12 13

Magical Research and Engineering

Ryan applies scientific thinking to magic, magitech, and social production. 1 8

  • Completed research on three-dimensional spatial-magic node optimization. 1
  • Completed experiments on primitive gunpowder weapons and the intelligence testing of Tower Spirits. 1
  • Optimized the Grease spell through fuel-flammability research. 1
  • Pursued unfinished work on thermodynamics in evocation, controlled undead labor, magic armor modification, and magic-powered engines. 1 8

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Ryan's Personal Staff / Ryan's Exclusive Staff — a bound cold-iron-and-adamantine staff with a perfect sapphire; grants +1 Intelligence, Strength, Constitution, and Charisma. It can maintain three spells of third circle or lower each week. 3 12
    • Recorded spells: Exhaustion, Bull's Strength, and Cat's Grace. 3 12
    • Later became an Artifact card whose weight can be adjusted and which responds like an extension of Ryan's body. 28
  • Ring of Aelinsus — Yefalin's protective ring; its magic shield blocked the drow assassin's opening strike, and it enabled Ryan to cast Lesser Teleportation. 6 11
  • Greater Teleportation scroll — emergency escape item capable of bypassing spatial locks below seventh level and randomly transporting Ryan to safety. 12
  • Planeswalker deck — includes card forms of his staff, Lesser Fireball, Dimension Door, Fly, Dispel Magic, and Hold Person. 3 48
  • Traveler Space / Planeswalker time-space — concealed dimensional storage used for supplies, corpses, spell materials, and other hoarded equipment. 14 15 20
  • Black Rose hand cannon — firearm used to defeat the Level 12 mage replica in the Tower of Babel's second trial. 48 49
  • Myriad Changes Cards / Magic Omnipotence Cards — three dangerous ancient cards drawn in the ruins. 39 40
    • First card summoned a Bagula Demon, which Ryan defeated. 40 42
    • Second card granted Sorcerous Wisdom. 42
    • Third card, Castling, swapped Kasla and Arata with goblins after they answered its question. 43
