Nature and Awakening
Planeswalker is an aptitude rather than a conventional profession. Most Planeswalkers pursue a secondary power system—such as wizardry, psionics, bloodline sorcery, or martial arts—alongside their Spark-derived abilities. Ryan Chris chooses wizardry as his primary path. 2 19
A Planeswalker is created when an individual with a Spark successfully ignites it. Sparks are extraordinarily rare: roughly one being in tens of millions possesses one, and only a small fraction of those individuals ever awaken it. 3 5
Spark ignition has no fixed method.
- It may occur during a near-death crisis or traumatic event. 3 5
- It may arise through a life-changing realization or deep meditation. 3 5
- A remnant Spark can be used to safely cultivate and ignite one's own Spark through sustained mana and mental-energy investment. 5
- Ignition enables travel through time and space, allowing the bearer to explore other worlds and develop through accumulated knowledge and experience. 3 19
Abilities and Mechanics
Multiversal Travel
Planeswalkers can cross the Multiverse and encounter different worlds, power systems, and sources of magic. This flexibility is particularly valuable in places where ordinary wizardry is limited, such as Dead Magic Zones or worlds governed by incompatible magical systems. 2 3
Their power is fundamentally based on observation, learning, recording, and applying what they have comprehended during their travels. 19 50
Time-Space Cards
A Planeswalker records understood beings, places, spells, objects, and concepts as cards. Cards are contracts between the Planeswalker and the recorded subject; the card form is simply the Spark's preferred vessel for that power. 19 20
Documented card categories include:
- Land — Generates mana and forms the foundation of a deck. 19
- Creature — Records contracted creatures or their power projections for summoning. 19
- Spell — Allows recorded magic to be cast by drawing the card and paying mana. 19
- Enchantment — Long-lasting battlefield-scale magic. 19
- Artifact — Devices, weapons, vehicles, constructs, or other manufactured objects with unusual power. 19
- Planeswalker — A projection of the Planeswalker's own power; official Planeswalkers can have such projections use cards themselves. 19
- Legendary — A documented card category. 19
Unlike ordinary mages, a Planeswalker can record magic outside their original profession if they can genuinely understand and comprehend it, including divine or druidic abilities. 19
Land Cards and Mana
Land cards are the source of a Planeswalker's usable energy. Basic lands produce mana periodically, while advanced lands provide greater output and may carry additional effects. 19
A Land card cannot simply be claimed from any location. The land must either belong to the Planeswalker or be a place where they have established legendary deeds. 19
The five basic mana colors represent distinct principles:
- White — Justice, unity, protection, law, order, and organization. 19
- Blue — Wisdom, intellect, magic, changeability, strategy, and cunning. 19
- Black — Ambition, death, plague, self-interest, and at times restoration of the dead. 19
- Red — Chaos, passion, wildness, explosive force, and berserk power. 19
- Green — Nature, life, growth, vitality, recovery, healing, and primal strength. 19
Most Planeswalkers specialize in one to three colors and shape their decks around those affinities. 19
Immortality and Its Cost
A Planeswalker card functions as a path to immortality. Ryan learns that paying ten blue or green mana daily prevents natural aging. 20
This immortality is conditional rather than absolute.
- Maintenance costs rise as a Planeswalker's strength and use of time-space cards increase. 20
- A growing Planeswalker must acquire stronger Land cards and expand their deck to sustain themselves. 20
- Failure to meet the required cost results in “eternal silence.” 20
- The need for continual accumulation explains why Planeswalkers travel instead of remaining isolated in one world. 20
Spark Protection
Ryan's Spark has demonstrated defensive properties beyond card use.
- It blocked the charm effect of the Castling Myriad Changes Card. 43 45
- It prevented the Tower of Babel's Virtual Martial Arena from reading and copying Ryan's thought pattern. 45
- It conceals Ryan from divination and prophecy, preventing even gods from tracking him through fate-based magic. 48
Planeswalker Time-Space
A Planeswalker's time-space is both a personal realm and the library in which their cards exist. Land cards manifest their mapped terrain within this realm. 20
The gray mist surrounding a time-space represents primordial chaos and serves as the graveyard for destroyed cards. 20
Ryan inherits the shattered remnant of the dwarven Planeswalker Augustus's time-space. His newly ignited Spark reactivates it as a nascent realm, initially containing the Western Wasteland and later the Maribo Forest. 5 20 28
Known Planeswalkers
- Augustus — A legendary dwarven shield-warrior who ignited his Spark during a near-death adventure. He later fought a mage empire for the sake of his dwarven kin, destroyed two floating cities, and died under the attacks of successive archmages. His remnant Spark, memories, world coordinates, and depleted deck passed to Ryan Chris. 5 20
- Ryan Chris — A wizard and arcanist who awakens as an Apprentice Planeswalker after cultivating Augustus's remnant Spark. He inherits Augustus's identity and begins building his own deck and time-space realm. 19 20 28
Ryan Chris's Documented Planeswalker Assets
- Western Wasteland — Basic Hill Land card; produces 12 white mana daily. 3 20
- Maribo Forest — Basic Forest Land card; produces 5 green mana daily. 3 28
- Ryan's Exclusive Staff — A bound weapon later converted into an Artifact card; initially grants increases to Intelligence, Strength, Constitution, and Charisma, and can retain three spells below the third circle. 3 28
- Free-Cast Technique — Ryan's Apprentice ability: casting outside the Weave halves the difficulty of his next spell and may randomly release a library spell no higher than his remaining level. It can trigger twice daily at his current level. 19 28
- Magic Omnipotence Cards / Myriad Changes Cards — Ancient Netherese cards with unpredictable effects. Ryan receives three, gaining Sorcerous Wisdom from one and using Castling from another. 39 40 42 43
Trivia
- Although cards are the traditional form for Planeswalker power, Ryan discovers they can be reshaped according to the user's will; he briefly transforms his card into a giant star-shaped sapphire before changing it back. 20
- The tradition of cards is attributed to a legendary first Planeswalker whose principle was “When in doubt, play a round.” 20
- Ryan maintains secrecy around his Planeswalker identity because exposure could attract legendary mages or demigods seeking his immortality. 20
