Background / History

Kakashi was a child prodigy who graduated from the Ninja Academy at age five. By the time Naruto, Sakura, and Sasuke graduate, he is an Anbu ninja renowned as the “Copy Ninja,” said to possess more than a thousand jutsu and to be among Konoha’s strongest jonin. The village elders select him to instruct the unusually young Team 7. 12

Although initially reluctant to lead such young students, Kakashi accepts the assignment and worries about their safety. He administers their bell test, ultimately recognizing Sasuke’s planning, weighted physical training, and exceptional speed. 13 15 17

During Team 7’s first serious escort mission, Kakashi protects his students and their client against the rogue ninja Sanli. He is wounded in an ambush, trapped in Iwayano’s Water Prison, and repeatedly orders Naruto, Sakura, and Sasuke to escape rather than risk themselves for him. 24 25 28 29

Kakashi becomes Sasuke’s lightning-nature mentor after discovering that his student knows Chidori, the technique Kakashi created. He teaches Sasuke chakra nature transformation but forbids him from using Chidori until awakening the Sharingan, warning that the technique’s speed makes it unsafe without enhanced perception. 17 18

Beneath that detached exterior, he is alert in dangerous territory, calm under attack, and deeply protective of his students. His conflict over Sasuke repeatedly shows that he does not regard Team 7 as disposable assets of the village. 24 25 51 71
