Background / History

Tsunade is the granddaughter of Hashirama Senju, the First Hokage. Her grandmother was Mito Uzumaki, giving Tsunade ties to the Uzumaki Clan; by seniority, Kushina Uzumaki calls her “Aunt Tsunade,” despite their relationship not being direct blood kin 7 8.

She became one of Konoha’s Legendary Sannin alongside Jiraiya and Orochimaru. Hiruzen Sarutobi has been her teacher since she was six and regards her as a daughter, granting her an unusual degree of familiarity in the Hokage’s presence 8 16 35.

Li Tong rejects her proposed conditions for becoming his gambling master, frustrating Tsunade and beginning their recurring clashes 15 16.

Interest in Li Tong’s Secret

After Li Tong survives the assassination attempt by elite jonin Uesugi Kama, Tsunade becomes increasingly curious about how a twelve-year-old could achieve such a feat. Hiruzen initially orders her to keep her distance because involvement could worsen the Hyuga Clan conflict 16 35.

She ignores the spirit of this distance by following Li Tong after his Hokage meeting and persistently questioning him 36 37.

Hypnosis Conflict

Li Tong hypnotizes Tsunade when she harasses him, leaving her in a trance that brings back painful memories. Furious when she awakens, Tsunade threatens to bury him alive and seals his chakra so he can prove hypnosis does not depend on chakra 37 38.

Li Tong successfully places her into deep sleep during the demonstration, then retaliates for her threat by covering her with mud in the pit. He later cleans her while she remains unconscious, fearing her reaction when she wakes 39 41.

Training Exchange and Mystical Palm Bet
