Background / History

Root was originally established by Danzō within Konoha's Anbu structure. It functioned as an exceptionally elite special mobile unit, described as the “Anbu's Anbu,” and handled the cruelest missions assigned to Anbu personnel. Its members were indoctrinated in Danzō's iron-blooded methods, while its combat personnel were drawn from Konoha's finest shinobi. 187

During the war era, Root maintained hundreds of masked operatives and numerous squad leaders of at least Special Jōnin rank. It was considered the most elite branch of Konoha's Anbu, although the Hokage's directly controlled Anbu possessed greater overall numbers. 68

Danzō brought Kagetsu Qi into Root, assigned him an Anbu squad, and intended to cultivate him as his successor. Root also served as a second academy for elite shinobi, teaching advanced ninjutsu and the foundational skills required of Anbu operatives. 68

Danzō later promised control of Root to the Huiyue Clan. Qi viewed the organization as the foundation for his clan's rise, since command of such a force would make its holder one of Konoha's most powerful figures. 187

Root was eventually separated from Anbu and made an independent department under Qi's leadership. Its emergence as an autonomous force greatly expanded its authority and altered Konoha's internal balance of power. 207 208

Organization

Membership

Root's personnel historically came from two principal sources:

• Danzō's adopted orphans — raised and trained as shinobi from childhood; many lacked fixed names and displayed limited emotional expression due to their upbringing. They formed the organization's grassroots. 79
• Konoha clan descendants — shinobi who joined for ideological reasons and retained greater independence and normal social behavior. They formed Root's elite contingent. 79
• Huiyue Clan and affiliated personnel — Root's later core drew heavily from the descendants of the Yuki and Kaguya clans, alongside former Root members and unaffiliated forces of similar origin. 296

Command

• Danzō — founder and original leader; personally selected and trained Qi as his intended successor. 68

Duties

Root's responsibilities changed substantially after its separation from Anbu.

Combat Capability

Root was regarded as Konoha's most elite standing military unit. Its unusually high proportion of Special Jōnin gave it superior access to, and coordination with, high-level ninjutsu. 296

• Its operatives were trained in tracking; the skill was considered fundamental to Root service. 315
• Its personnel wore distinctive black uniforms following its separation from Anbu. 292 299
• Root units could conduct deep raids against enemy military infrastructure, including Kumogakure rear camps and main camps. 299 300

Reputation

Root's reputation differed sharply inside and outside Konoha.

• Outside Konoha — Root was feared for its ruthlessness, assassinations, and willingness to pursue and eliminate impersonators or hostile operatives beyond Konoha's borders. 306
• Within Konoha — it was generally viewed favorably because its operations targeted outsiders rather than village residents, and because it provided practical intelligence support to fellow Konoha shinobi. 306
• Political significance — as an organization answering only to the Hokage after its reorganization, Root became one of Konoha's most influential independent armed divisions. 292

• Qi's induction — Danzō brings Kagetsu Qi to Root's underground base, introduces him to its masked operatives, and assigns him to an Anbu squad for training. 68
